Why doesn't mass participation in amateur soccer help improve our national team?
This question is the subject of Teddy Katz's excellent radio documentary on CBC today. You can hear it HERE
in Real Audio format.
Among other things, he talks to Bobby De Guzman, father of Jonathan and Julian, about what his sons had to go through to become professional players.
The leagues are run by people who don't know anything about developing soccer talent, there is a severe shortage of competent coaches, and a lack of proper playing surfaces.
Remarkably, Katz couldn't find anyone willing to defend the present system - not Dale Mitchell, not Colin Linford, nobody. Everyone acknowledges there is a serious problem but nothing much is being done about it.
This is well worth 23 minutes of your time.
