Thanks to the fumbling incompetence of the CSA and its inability to hire a national team coach in time for the Gold Cup, our national team will be coached by interim coach Stephen Hart for the duration of the tournament.

Lars Hirschfeld has rejected playing the Gold Cup.

"The situation demanded that I stay. We just have two keepers, and I have responsibility for not leaving Rosenborg in shortage of keepers. It would have been affecting the team too much in such an important period," Hirschfeld states.

Smart man, Lars.

Look after your bread and butter, 'cause the CSA won't do it for you.

This came as a big surprise. We may actually have a chance at topping the group now :\

You should top the group. Haiti played absolute crap against Guadeloupe. You should be able to beat Guadeloupe fairly easily, but don't take them lightly either. Canada can probably get at least four points out of the matches with Haiti and Guadeloupe, which would be enough to win it.

IMO, it would be a disaster if we didn't win the group, because that would mean weren't able to get 4 points off of Guadaloupe and Haiti.

Technically, it's an archipelago of five islands belonging to France.

ETA:
This department of the French government is not even a member of FIFA, but it participates in CONCACAF tournaments. They kicked our ass 2-1 on Saturday and now we are in a must-win situation against Haiti.

2-1 loss to Guadlalapoopay.

Embarassing stuff.

Sutton was a mile off his line on the first goal, then takes 5 seconds to react on the second one. I've never been impressed with him, he has blunders every game.

We had most of the ball, and were always in front of the opponents' box, but there's absolutely zero creativity aside from de Rosario and de Guzman. Garba just tries to take 50 shots a game and it doesn't work, Hutchinson just runs into players, Nash trying 50 yard passes that never reach their destination... it's awful.

We will need an excellent performance against Haiti on Monday to advance.

Does anyone really care about this tournament, honestly?

I think the threads about it in the Canadian, Mexican, American, and CONCACAF forums speak for themselves.

The most important thing about the tournament (and perhaps the only important thing) is that it actually gives Canada a chance to play some matches.

Our development program is in shambles and our reputation/FIFA ranking is so bad that nobody wants to play us in friendlies, so tournaments like this where other teams are pretty much forced to play us are about the only place we are going to get some match time with opponents who actually care whether they beat us or not.

In fact, teams like Haiti and Costa Rica get a lot more matches than we do, because they have to go thorough preliminary rounds to get to the final tournament, whereas we get a bye into the last round (why??) and then crap out after a few games. Same with the WC qualifiers; typically it's 3 or 4 matches for Canada and then we're mathematically eliminated for another four years.

--------------
Sportsnet has tonight's match with Haiti on tape delay:
11:00 p.m. PT / Midnight MT / 1:00 a.m. CT / 2:00 a.m. ET / 3:00 a.m. AT

Pat Onstad will be in goal.
