Mitchell passes on MLS stars for friendly
Canada's new coach picks only Euro-based players against Iceland
August 15, 2007
by Morgan Campbell
Toronto Star

The showdown between Mo Johnston and the Canadian Soccer Association will have to wait a while.

In late May the national team selected goalkeeper Greg Sutton, then returned him to Toronto FC with a concussion that could end his season. The situation so upset Johnston that he promised to be stingy about releasing players the next time the national team had an international friendly.

But when picking the roster for next Wednesday's friendly in Iceland, new national team head coach Dale Mitchell didn't even call Johnston, or any other MLS head coach. Instead, heading into his first game at the helm, Mitchell selected a roster composed entirely of European-based players.

Mitchell, former coach of Canada's under-20 national team, said with MLS and USL teams so busy this summer, it didn't make sense to fly them to Iceland to play on a Wednesday night.

"It's a midweek game in Europe so I thought it was an ideal opportunity to get the majority of our European (based) players in," Mitchell said.

"You want to make sure that you get a chance to see the guys, and get a chance to work with them up close and personal whenever you can."

Of the 17 players slated to dress for that game, 10 played in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, where Canada lost to the U.S. in the semifinals. The squad includes veterans Paul Stalteri and Julian De Guzman who was named the Gold Cup's MVP.

Mitchell says the roster will look different on Sept. 9, when Canada hosts Costa Rica in a friendly at BMO Field. For that game, he says, he'll include more MLS and USL players.

Canada's delegation to Iceland includes three coaches and two physiotherapists, but doesn't include a team doctor. Sutton, who suffered a concussion during a Gold Cup practice in Miami, has criticized the national team for not having a doctor.

The team didn't take a doctor to Miami, but two days after Sutton's concussion a local physician pronounced him fit to play.

Mitchell says he's confident doctors in Iceland will keep his players healthy but he still says he'd like to see a full-time team physician.

Iceland's FIFA ranking: 117
Canada's FIFA ranking: 53

Will Canada go down as a result of this match?
