Canada's FIFA Ranking

This should quiet some naysayers.

CANADA 54 (+29)

Only top 95 team that moved more than Canada was Ukraine (+30)

A new method has been used to calculate this eagerly awaited first World Ranking since the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, which not only introduces major changes in points allocation and the assessment of the opposition's strength, but also makes such factors as the importance of the match and regional strength easier to understand. This new formula and the big points hauls gained from World Cup matches has led to a complete shake up in the ranking. Besides the effect of the World Cup matches, the change in the evaluation period has also led to a major shift. Now only the last four years (48 months) count, with each year weighted differently.

Daniel at Vs asks a really good question. How will this affect Canadians trying to get into England? What was it before? You had to be ranked in the top 75 and a player had to play 75% of their countries' internationals. Something like that?

The New FIFA Rankings - CANADA ZOOMS! Again!

Those wacky FIFA rankings have Canada moving up 38 places (second only to Armenia's 48 place gain for June 2007)

Canada is now ranked 56th. Not sure if the latest Gold Cup results are factored in but we beat two teams ranked above us and lost to a team that is not ranked by FIFA so it doesn't count against us (I think). Guadeloupe is ranked 100th by ELO.

We are ranked 6th in Concacaf not too far from 3rd.

16 1 USA
26 2 Mexico
46 3 Costa Rica
52 4 Panama
55 5 Honduras
56 6 Canada

BTW the ELO ratings have us ranked 52nd.

Will be interesting if we can maintain this for awhile how it will affect players getting visas in the UK.

Edit: A note from a previous post of mine

Why these rankings are important. In the last few years Canadians have been virtually shut out of England if they did not have an EU passport. Andre Hainault who is now in the Czech Republic could not get a work permit with Crystal Palace even though CP applied and they wanted him. There was a backdoor way to get a working "Holidaymaker Visa" but this loophole has been closed.

The win over Costa Rica was the major reason for the jump. As far as the FIFA rankings not meaning anything i would say they do count for something because the better your ranking is the better chances you have at playing some good teams in friendly matches or in the case if you make it to the next World Cup then it counts for coef points in the draw.

Agree with the points here. If if the ranking system is questionable, it should be accepted to the point where you realize it can affect the future of the NT and is not just a reflector of what has already happened.

Canada keeps third-place rank within CONCACAF

Canada’s men’s national team is still the third-ranked country in the CONCACAF region. Canada slipped up three more spots from 54 to 51 in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings which were released October 24, 2007.
