FIFA World Youth Championship 2005

This is the U-20 World Cup, which takes place every two years. The next one, in 2007, will be in Canada.

I'm starting a new thread here for the tournament itself. The CONCACAF qualifying thread was here. [Canada qualified!]

The FIFA website is here.

Host: Netherlands
Dates: June 10-July 2, 2005

Teams:
CONCACAF
Canada
USA
Honduras
Panama

Europe
Netherlands
Spain
Turkey
Ukraine
Switzerland
Italy
Germany

Asia
South Korea
China
Japan
Syria

Africa
Nigeria
Egypt
Bénin
Morocco

South America
Brazil
Argentina
Colombia
Chile

Oceania
Australia

What happened at the last U-20 World Championship? Canada didn't make it to the round of 16.

I wouldn't count out Canada from the top two.

Italy is miles ahead of the pack, that has to be accepted. I watched the highlights of the Euro -19 Championships (this is the same team taking part but they have obviously aged and are now the U-20) and only a team on the very top of their game can match them. The three teams in this group just can't deal with Alberti, Esposito and co.

You have to remember alot of these players have roles in Seria A clubs, and a few are emerging as regulars.

Colombia, have one of the best youth setups in South America. They do have a tendancy to not live up to their own hype however. They are great going foward but shaky at the back. One chance is all it takes.

It would be a let down if Canada can't beat Syria. I mean really...Syria

The favourites are Spain without doubt. Teams can't break them down, and even if they do- Spain will put another 5 past you afterwards.
Brazil is a bit inconsistant, but I would say would be second in the running. After that it would be Ukraine, Italy or maybe even the hosts.

To those that don't know why Ukraine is in the mix - no, Im not bias. Ukraine beat, France, England, Denmark and Italy to name just a few on the road to the semi's last year. The were the only team to actually stretch Spain; coming from behind twice to tie 2-2, but ultimately lose on penalties.

Our best players are Artem Milevsky, and Alexander Aliev. There are defenders that can be pin-pointed also, but collectively Ukraine has the best defence (on paper) in Europe.

What is the situation like with the Canadian U-20's? I know they got pretty far in the UAE... What clubs go some of these boys play for?

Mitchell Announces Youth Roster For Pre-tournament Camp

http://www.canadasoccer.com/eng/medi...?Press_ID=2194

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Men’s Youth (U-20) Head Coach Dale Mitchell has named his 22-player roster for Canada’s pre-tournament training camp and games in Lievin, France from May 31–June 6, 2005. Mitchell will name his final roster for Canada’s third consecutive FIFA World Youth Championship on June 3rd.

The team will play a friendly against Morocco on June 3rd and an exhibition against a Belgian Select team on June 6th.

"We feel like this group of players have earned the right to represent Canada at the World Youth Championships,” said Mitchell. “During the last year or so, I have seen all of them play a strong international game for the U20's. Of course, we are going to need everybody playing to their potential at the same time to make this tournament a success for us.”

Canada will travel to Tilburg, Netherlands on June 7th to take part in the FIFA World Youth Championship Netherlands 2005 from June 10–July 2 where they will compete in Group E against Colombia, Italy, and Syria. Canada will play its opening match on June 12th against Syria before playing Colombia on June 15th. Canada’s final match in the group stage is against Italy on June 18th in Kerkrade, Holland.

Second stage (Round of sixteen) play will begin on June 21st; the FIFA World Youth Championship 2005 final will take place on July 2nd in Utrecht, Holland.

Canada secured their spot after wining their group at CONCACAF qualifying with victories over Mexico, Honduras, and Jamaica; extending their CONCACAF qualifying unbeaten streak to nine games.

FIFA World Youth Championship

The FIFA World Youth Championship is a 24 nation and 52-match tournament featuring the best young 20-year-old players in the world. It is the second largest event staged by FIFA after the FIFA World Cup.

Canada’s most recent participation in this event occurred in December 2003 when its squad had its best ever finish, losing to eventual silver medalist Spain, on a golden goal in the quarter-finals held in the United Arab Emirates.

Please visit FIFA.com for more information on the FIFA World Youth Championship.

They could promote it even better if they didn't make us Ontarians wait up all night to see tape-delayed matches.
