CONCACAF qualifiers for U-17 World Championship

Excerpt from Canadian Soccer Association press release, Wednesday, July 07, 2004:
Quote:
Canada will host Group B from May 19-23, 2005 at Jeux Canada Games Stadium in St. John, New Brunswick. Canada will be joined by Mexico, CFU Series 2 Winner, UNCAF Series 2 Winner (Honduras/Belize/Panama).
Excerpt from CONCACAF press release, December 16, 2004:
Quote:
CONCACAF announced today that Mexico is hosting the 2005 CONCACAF Under-17 Final Round Group B, which also includes Canada, Haiti and Honduras.
Canadian Press story, February 4/05:
Quote:
Qualifying for the men's under-17 world soccer championship, a tough task at the best of times, just got harder for Canada.

Canada was scheduled to host a qualifying tournament this spring in Saint John, N.B. But CONCACAF, which governs soccer in North and Central America and the Caribbean, deemed the facilities unsatisfactory and moved the event to Mexico.

The young Canadians will now head south in either March or April to play Haiti, Honduras and host Mexico.

Another CONCACAF qualifier, featuring the U.S., Cuba, El Salvador and host Costa Rica, is scheduled for April 12-16 in San Jose, Costa Rica.

The winner of each qualifier advances to the world championship in Peru from Sept. 15 to Oct. 2 while the runners-up meet in a home-away playoff to determine CONCACAF's third berth at the 16-team championship.

Canada's record at the under-17 world tournament is poor, qualifying for just four of the 10 previous championships and finishing last each time. Canada, which hosted the event in 1987, has not qualified since the 1995 championship in Ecuador.

The U.S., in contrast, is the only country to have qualified for all 10 championships. Brazil has won three of the last four under-17 titles.

More details on how and why Canada lost the hosting of the Group B matches:

Canada was supposed to host that qualifying tournament, at Canada Games Stadium in Saint John, N.B., but CONCACAF asked that it be moved.

Kevan Pipe, COO of the Canadian Soccer Association, said Canadian officials had always said they intended to hold the tournament in Saint John's 5,000-seat venue.

"It seemed to be fine and all of a sudden they (CONCACAF) demanded a 10,000-seat facility," Pipe said.

Complicating matters is the fact CONCACAF then asked the CSA to switch the venue to Victoria, whose stadium also seats less than 10,000.

The CSA refused. "We made a commitment to Soccer New Brunswick that we would bring a CONCACAF qualifying championship to New Brunswick," Pipe said.

CONCACAF then moved the event to Mexico.

Americans Defeat Canada 2-0
Source: CanadaSoccer.com

Canada’s Junior Under-17 Team was defeated 2-0 by the United States on Sunday, April 24 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

The Americans scored in the sixth minute and in the 78th minute.

“We gave up an early goal on a fundamental error and really looked rather lethargic all game,” said head coach Stephen Hart. “We only created three clear chances in the entire game and needless to say we failed to finish.”

Canada will travel today to Guatemala City, Guatemala to play friendlies and continue their camp.

Canada is preparing for group B final round CONCACAF Under-17 qualifying where they will compete against Haiti, Honduras, and host Mexico for a place in the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship in Peru from September 15 – October 2, 2005.

We play Mexico on Saturday.

Mexico has not conceded a goal in their last 574 minutes.

If we lose to Mexico, we go home, since Honduras is a cinch to beat Haiti and finish with 6 points, to clinch second place and go on to meet Costa Rica for the third CONCACAF spot.

So we have to beat Mexico. This would give us an identical 2-1-0 record with Mexico and (again assuming Honduras beats Haiti) Honduras.

Under the Regulations the tie-breaking rules are, in order:

a. The result of head-to-head competition between the two [or three]tied teams;

b. The difference between goals for and goals against from all group matches;

c. The team having scored the most goals from all group matches;

d. Failing this, the qualified team shall be determined by a drawing of lots carried out by a member of the Organizing Committee.

Mexico beat Honduras 3-0; Honduras beat Canada 2-0; Canada has to beat Mexico by at least two goals to surpass Honduras's goal difference of -1.

In short, we're screwed.
