Marco Reda

Marco Reda to AaB Aalborg...

The Danish Superliga club AaB Aalborg have signed a one-year contract with the 27-yo Canadian, Marco Reda, from the Norwegian club Sogndal. The key central defender did not want to renew his contract with the newly relegated Tippeliga club Sogndal and join AaB on a free transfer as Bosman player..

Do anyone know how many caps Marco Reda has won for Canada (U-21 and A caps) ?? ..

I belive Marco Reda is the first Canadian player in the Danish Superliga ?. AaB is known in Denmark for always buying very good foreign defenders (mostly Norwegian and Swedish internationals) and I know AaB have wanted Reda for a long time and made a bid on him last season. He also got the number 4 shirt at AaB straight away, so they surely want to use him as a regular.

According to the Sogndal website and norwegian newsmedia, then Sogndal did all they could to keep Reda at the club, but it seems he wanted to leave the Norwegian league to try something else and according to his Agent, he had better offers from England and Denmark. The Sogndal website says he was the boss (or captain) in their defence and the most clever player in the Sogndal squad... They also write that their central defence were one of the strongest in Tippeligaen with Reda and Koakou. Also all the Norwegian papers I have seen, write that he was one of 3 great players Sogndal was going to lose this season, so he seem highly rated in Norway... How is he rated in Canada ??...

As far as I know, Marco has never been capped! He's not even listed in the official player pool for the Canadian national team.

He played for the Toronto Lynx for several years and was one of the best defenders on the team.

I am not aware of any Canadians who have played in the Superliga, so Marco may well be the first.

Here's an informative page of background about him (and a pic of him in his Lynx shirt):

Thanks..

Strange that he's not listed as having been capped ?. At the Sogndal website they wrote he's a Canadian international ... I can see he was called up by Holger Osieck for a friendly against the US in january 2003, but I dont know if he got to play. However, yesterday I found this link below saying that he used to be a member of Canada’s Olympic team, Canada’s U-20 World Cup team and a standout for the Canadian team in the Pan American Games in 1999.

Yes, it is strange.

Reda was called up for the friendly of January 18, 2003, but sat on the bench the whole game.

He did play in the Pan Am Games, but that doesn't count as "caps" apparently.

The Canadian Soccer Association does not list him among their capped players at any level.

As far as I know, there are no canadians playing. There is a chance that there are a few Canadians floating around a few youth teams. Parma Youth Coaches did a tour around BC a couple years ago. So theres a chance a few players got tryouts out of it, but probably didnt amount to anything further. Its to bad it wasnt an open invite though :depress:

Well, that was my big comeback post, ok, maybe not big, since probably know one even remembers me, but a comeback all the same. Enjoying my holidays, figured id see whats going on in the good ole Canadian soccer forum. Not much has changed though, I think I see a few threads from my last visit a year ago

Sice Read is moving to AaB, then here is a few facts about the squad :

AaB Ålborg

most likely 1st 11, playing 4-5-1 (or 4-4-2) :

Goalkeeper:
Jimmy Nielsen, Captain (Just selected as Danish Superliga keeper of the year)

Defence:
Allan Olesen
Trond Andersen (Norway, 35 caps)
Marco Reda (Canada)
Allan K. Jepsen

Midfield:
Mattias Lindström (Sweden, 3 caps)
Rasmus Würtz (Den U21 Captain)
Martin Ericsson (Sweden, 1 cap)
Allan Gaarde
Mads Bro Hansen

Forward:
David Nielsen
----

Transfers in January, so far :

IN:
24-yo right winger, Mattias Lindström, Sweden, 3 caps (Helsingborgs IF)
27-yo defender, Marco Reda, Canada (Sogndal)
20-yo forward, Simon Bræmer (Back from loan, Silkeborg)

OUT:
29-yo defender, Kleber Saarenpää, Sweden, 11 caps (retired)
32-yo defender, Bård Borgersen, Norway, 5 caps (Start, Norway)
34-yo striker, Christian Lundberg (Randers)
20-yo midfielder, Dantas Wellington, Brazil (back from loan, Atletico Mineiro)
27-yo defender, Kristoffer Arvhage, Sweden (back from loan, Elfsborg)
29-yo defender, Jacob Krüger (contract expired)

Comments:
Right winger Mattias Lindström was the big star player at Helsingborgs IF in Allsvenskan this season, scoring 9 goals in 25 games. He could be a real scoop for AaB, even getting him on a free transfer. The very talented 19-yo Brazilian forward, Tulio De Melo (5 goals in 12 Superliga games as a sub for AaB this season), has still not signed a new contract with the club.

Latest news & rumours :
Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen may be on the move. He has just refused offers from both Leicester and Queens Park Rangers, saying that his trial at QPR was very disappointing since everything at the club, including the training sessions, was at a very low standard. However, he said last week that also Borussia Münchengladbach and Hertha Berlin has shown interest as well as FC Copenhagen has been named as a possibility...

Marco Reda get his "debut" for AaB ...

The Danish teams have now started their first preparations for the rest of the Superliga season with the unofficial Danish Indoor Championship, though except for FC Midtjylland and AaB, then most of the "Bigger" teams like FC Copenhagen, Brøndby, AGF Aarhus and OB Odense did not want to participate this season...

So as usual two other Scandinavian teams were invited. The Norwegian Silver medalist's Vålerenga and also Lyn Oslo. However, due to a family tragedy with the Lyn coach, they were replaced with one of the top 3 teams from the Danish 1st division SonderjydskE, to play for the honour and the €10,000 ... This year the Danish Oldboys NT was also invited to make up for the lack of "top teams" and make the tournament a bit more fun and interesting ..

Spar Nord New years Cup 2005 (at the Gigantium, Ålborg):

The the unofficial Danish Indoor Championship is played on artificial turf, 11 minutes a game and with 7 players on each teams. The rules are as usual, except that 0-0 results dont give any points and teams that scores 3 or more goals in a match is given 1 extra point...

January 16

Group play :

Group 1.
FCN v DEN Oldboys 0-0 (No points !)
Viborg v Silkeborg 1-2

AaB v Viborg 1-0
Silkeborg v DEN Oldboys 1-0

AaB v FCN 1-0
Viborg v FCN 0-4 (4 points to FCN)

AaB v Silkeborg 3-2 (4 points to AaB)
Viborg v DEN Oldboys 1-1

Silkeborg v FCN 3-1 (4 points to Silkeborg)
AaB v DEN Oldboys 2-0

Group 1, Standings:

AaB ................ : 7-2 .. 13 points
Silkeborg ......... : 8-5 .. 10 points
--------------------------------
FC Nordsjælland : 5-4 .. 4 points
DEN Oldboys.... : 1-4 .. 1 point
Viborg ............ : 2-8 .. 1 point

Surely a deserved win for AaB in this group, showing the best football. Marco Reda looked solid in defence and very good at passing the ball. He also made the assist when the other new AaB player, Swedish international Mattias Lindström made the winning goal against Viborg...

The Danish Oldboys NT did much better than expected. They ofcause lacked the pace needed at this level, but their still excellent anticipation, technique and tactical skills plus some good goalkeeping kept them in the games..
---

Group 2.
FCM v AC Horsens 1-1
Vålerenga v Herfølge 1-1

FCM v Herfølge 2-0
SønderjyskE v AC Horsens 1-1

Vålerenga v SønderjyskE 0-3 (4 points to SonderjyskE)
Vålerenga v AC Horsens 3-0 (4 points to Vålerenga)

FCM v SønderjyskE 0-0 (no points!)
Herfølge v SønderjyskE 2-2

FCM v Vålerenga 3-1 (4 points to FCM)
Herfølge v AC Horsens 1-1

Group 2, Standings:

FC Midtjylland............ : 6-2 .. 8 points
SønderjyskE (1st Div.). : 6-3 .. 6 points
--------------------------------------
Vålerenga (Norway).... : 5-7 .. 5 points
Herfølge .................. : 4-6 .. 3 points
AC Horsens (1st Div.). : 3-6 .. 3 points

Despite the loss of the Danish league star Zidan and Danish NT keeper Peter Skov, FCM managed to win this group, with the Danish 1st division team SonderjyskE, surprisingly getting the 2nd place by showing some good football and beating the Norwegian top team Vålerenga 3-0, despite the fact that SonderjyskE had to join this tournament as a "last minute" stand-in for Norwegian Lyn Oslo....
----

Semi finals:

FCM v Silkeborg 0-2
0-1: Henrik Schnedler (2)
0-2: Lasse Ankjær (6)

AaB v SønderjyskE 0-0
American Penalties:
Peter Tranberg, AaB misses pen.
0-1: Rasmus Johansen
1-1: Allan K. Jepsen
1-2: Henrik Hansen
2-2: Rasmus Würtz
2-3: Michael Nonbo

SønderjyskE win on Penalties

Final:

Silkeborg v SønderjyskE 1-2
0-1: Henrik Hansen (5)
1-1: Ulrik Pedersen (6)
1-2: Peter Nymann (7)

The 3rd best 1st division team SonderjyskE surprisingly beat all the Superliga teams to win the tournament, but they were a bit lucky with beating AaB on penalties in the semi final. AaB looked very solid in defence only letting in two regular goals in 5 games and Marco Reda looked very solid, not making any mistakes and also showing great vision and anticipation, not only making an assist, but also some other great passes, creating some huge opportunities for the AaB forwards... So a very promising debut to Reda, though AaB didnt manage to win the unofficial Danish Indoor Championship this season...

Competitor to Marco Reda in defence ?? ....

AaB Aalborg have signed some more players, one of them being the highly rated Danish U19 NT captain, Michael Jakobsen, from PSV Eindhoven. The very highly rated defencive talent, was signed on a 3-year contract in 2003 by PSV and Frank Arnesen (who is now sports director in Tottenham). According to onside.dk then Arnesen think that AaB have made a scoop and praise AaB for making an excellent deal..

AaB have also signed a ½-year contract with the 22-yo Brazilian midfield talent, Fabiano de Freitas Santos, who has played several league games for the Brazilian top-flight club Bahia and some league games for Botafogo Paraiba.

Further more, the highly rated 19-yo Hamburger SV talent, Besart Berisha, has been handed a trial at AaB. The former Kosovo-Albanian has lived in Germay since he was 7-yo and was also considered for the German U19 NT, but unfortunately he had to leave Germany last summer, due to the fact he didnt have a permanent residence permit.. He then changed his citizenship to Serbian to be able to return to Germany, but so far he has not been able to get a German citizenship so that he can play for the German U19's...

AaB winter break transfer so far:

IN:
24-yo right winger, Mattias Lindström, Sweden 3 caps (Helsingborgs IF)
27-yo defender, Marco Reda, Canada (Sogndal, Norway)
19-yo defender, Michael Jakobsen, Den U19 (PSV Eindhoven)
22-yo midfielder, Fabiano de Freitas Santos, Brazil (Bahia/Botafogo Paraiba)
19-yo forward, Tulio de Melo, Brazil (on loan from Atletico Mineiro)
20-yo forward, Simon Bræmer (Back from loan, Silkeborg)

Hamburger SV talent to AaB

The 19-yo forward, Besart Berisha, has moved to AaB Aalborg on a 1-year loan deal from the German Bundesliga club Hamburger SV. The former Kosovo-Albanian has lived in Germay since he was 7-yo, but so far the German FA have failed to help him get a German citizenship so he can play for the German U19 NT...

AaB scandal ... Star striker Axed

The 28-yo former Fortuna Düsseldorf, FCK, Wimbledon and Norwich striker, David Nielsen was axed today by AaB, because he punched his team-mate, Allan Gaarde, in the face at training two days ago. This scandal is the latest step to a sad downfall for the former Danish U21 NT striker, who was embroiled in a gambling scandal along with AaB keeper Jimmy Nielsen in 2004. David's name was splashed across the front pages of Denmark's national newspapers after AaB admitted at a press conference that their star striker and long-serving goalkeeper had accumulated debts of DKK 1.6 million (€215,000) with a local betting shop.

The two players were betting on football doubles (predicting the full-time scores of two games), and the board of directors at Aalborg decided to name and shame the pair, as well as setting up counselling sessions on gambling problems. The club stressed that they had not done anything illegal but that counselling sessions would be provided to help identify any gambling addictions.

Jimmy Nielsen payed his debts straight away, while Davids level of credit with the Aalborg bookies was so big, that the shop was forced to close due to David not being able to pay his debts. David was later almost declare bankrupt and lost his house and his wife in the process... and now he has also lost his job at AaB, a sad ending to a sad story

According to AaB, they are now looking for a replacement and they also say that several top-flight clubs in Scandinavia has shown interest in signing David, who has scored 20 goals in 50 games for AaB...

Oh, by the way... If you find that Danish league club names look a bit strange an impossible to pronounce ... then her is a little transelation :

Å or Aa, sounds much like Oh

AaB Ålborg sounds like Oh'beh Ohl'bor
Viborg = we'bor
AGF Aarhus = AGF Or'hus

Herfølge is a bit more tricky to transelate since the Ø sounds a bit like the "U" in "surveillance".

Herfølge = Her'furl'ye

Æ is pronounced much like the Canadian word: "Eh?"
