No Hockey this year!? Opprotunity for Soccer?

This week, the NHL announced that it was going on a lockout, which would prevent the NHL season of 2004/2005 from begining.

Last time a major sport even went on lockout was in 1994 and that was baseball. Baseball damadged itself when it went on lockout. The lockout damadged there business. Not many stadiums sell and many fans in the U.S shifted from baseball to some other sport, even hockey.

Since Hockey wont' be aired on saturday night TV or whenver, who will fill the slots for those prime hours? Can potential Canadian soccer and World soccer fill the spot?

Very unlikely, I'm afraid. The networks that broadcast hockey aren't big on soccer, and all the soccer broadcast rights deals were sealed long ago.

I can't see the CBC or TSN going out and buying European soccer rebroadcast rights (they would not be live broadcasts in Canadian prime time) at this point in time. Especially since the hockey lockout could end at a moment's notice.

As for Canadian soccer, there ain't any after September. And nobody wants to watch it.

Ultimately it all depends on what the sponsors are prepared to pay for. Given enough enthusiastic advertisers, we could see soccer on TV every night of the year, instead of hockey, like we have now!

Whatever the case is right now, someone badly needs to fill in the gap for prime time hockey. It is big bucks. I was reading in the star a few days ago, that CBC laid off like 70 workers, since there is no hockey season. It is really chatoic situation that is going now in the broadcasting industry. I just feel that hockey is on hold and someone needs to fill its gaps. Not just for the viewers, but also the employees.

The only realistic solution i got is that CBC goes and does Basketball this season.

But dammit! I want some Argentinian soccer instead

The eastern-controlled, mainstream media would have you believe that Wednesday is the Apuckalypse. They say the sky is falling because the collective bargaining agreement between National Hockey League team owners and players will expire with no new deal on the horizon. If you're under their spell, you'll already have bought enough Molson Canadian Bubba mini-kegs, crates of Timbits and the complete library of Don Cherry Rock 'em, Sock 'em Hockey videos to survive without capital-H Hockey until next summer.

CBC will probably be showing movies instead of hockey on Saturday nights.

This Saturday, for instance, they are showing a CFL game followed at 10:00 by a movie, "Best in Show". I highly recommend this movie! (even though it's not about soccer....)
