Great win! Electric atmosphere.

I thought we were outplayed for large passages of the first half and early in the second. Very poor first half in terms of playing football, but well organized in defense for the most part. Too many bad paces and lost duels in that half. Our defending of corners was also poor.

Atalanta will wonder how they ended drawing the first half, but they did not create many chances. Loved seeing their fans clapping in the end of the game. Gasperini deserves credit too.

The second half much better, we really stopped them. We never seem able to really control games in possession, which I’d like to see. Part of it may be Gattuso who seems above all a counter attacking-oriented manager, but also we likely just don’t have the players.

Our midfield was more flexible than usual. Players moved everywhere. On paper I like it. But it was also at points chaotic, and ultimately we were dominated in the first half. Poor performances by several players did not help. We have improved a lot better much better mentally for sure.

Players:

Donnarumma was suspect in Atalanta’s first goal, but it was very hard to stop. Otherwise very solid even if he did not have a ton to do. Very good with the ball. People have been very critical of this because of the early games, but he is actually very confident.

Calabria very enthusiastic. Solid as usual

Romagnoli is great. Beat by Zapata once or twice, but overall good.

Musacchio has improved a lot.

Rodriguez destroyed by Ilicic in their goal. Not a guarantee in defense, not very dangerous in attack. Great cross though for Piatek’s goal.

Kessie moved to the center of midfielder at some points, looked better, much more mobile and moved well. Much better than when stuck to righ mezzala. He was beat several times. Everybody talks about his poor football intelligence and decision-making, but it is often his terrible technique that lets him down. Missed a very easy chance in first half and another half chance. Many missed passes, horrible ball control. He improved quite a bit in the second half.

Bakayoko. Some great tackles. Good, simple decisions. He too was beat repeatedly by several players, but also just impressive, moves vertically, lots of impetus.

Paquetá was positionally very good, and the guys just has lots and lots of quality – his skill is truly something to behold, does some stuff with the ball I have rarely seen players do. Overdoes his thing where he hides the ball putting his foot on top and turning back… He’s great at it but does it all the time and in dangerous areas. Too smart sometimes, should have scored a goal in the 75’ but tried some fancy move.

Hakan, pretty much useless in the first half other than moving and trying. Then extraordinary goal! I ****ing told you!!! Then immediately after that a great corner from him! And then a good play intercepting an Atalanta attack and a long range pass. As said, this could really make a difference.

Suso very poor, barely present. Erratic. Garbage performance in first half. Tactically disciplined though, helps in defense. Better in second half, much more involved, but still many missed passes and just poor. Should have been replaced earlier in the second half.

Piatek very dangerous and extremely energetic. Amazing first goal. Great movement, extraordinary finish. Striker’s striker. Seems like a jewel and is in deadly form.

Different player because he is more dynamic (and less of a passing genius), but the skills in small spaces, back to the goal remind me of Ganso and Riquelme

A young Seedorf, the Real Madrid version. Or going back even further and picking a Brazilian comparison, his idol's idol: Rai.

Extremely important 3 points! We didn't play well, that's the truth, especially in the first half when we were piss poor. But that equalizer changed things. PornTech! What a striker! I say give him the #9 already. Paqueta is what we've been missing somewhat in midfield - someone will skills and technique. He's not fast, likes the fancy a bit too much and wasn't great in the long range shoot/pass category. But hey! It's been long we had a player like him, as all we have were carpenters and mechanics in the midfield before his coming.

Good goal from Hakan, finally. Let's hope the confidence bring out the best in him. Confidence can do a lot to a footballer. And I believe that's part of what's troubling Kessié as I believe he's not as bad as we been seeing. He'd be a lot better if he regained some measure of confidence.

We send a signal to the rest of our revival. The CL spot is in our gasp and for us to lose.

Porn Tek has broken a club record for the number of goals and fastest scored since playing for Milan.

Our latest signing Porntek, Paqueta and Bakayoko really change this team dynamic.

Shame we didnt also sign Muriel coz then together with Porntek and Suso we would have introduced the world of football to the deadly PMS

To be a bit more fair with Suso, pretty sick cross to Kessié from him for that sitter he missed in the first half. Still poor game, but that was a great chance he created out of nothing.

Credit to Atalanta for Suso's difficulties. Palomino was given the task of man-marking him and he did a good job at it.

Depends on the context. Had Kessie made one of numerous charging runs forward into the final third of the pitch? His heat map and kms covered would likely be significantly greater than everyone else. He's often our second most forward player (Piatek as striker the obvious one to lead the line) as his runs are very dynamic and vertical, plus he often does a high-press on the opponents.

The weakness when we do a break of opponent play. when Bakayoko or Paqueta has the ball, we lack of a quick wing player to really support the counter and stretch the opponent.

Porntek really do wonder with half chances but we need to find that missing ingredient during the summer. That will elevate this team further.

Calabria really deserve to put Conti on the bench with his performance for the past 3 matches. Competition is good.

I thought a lot about this and I still can't put my finger on it he has poise, technique and a dazzling array of skills, strong in the air, wins balls back, good upper body strength and balance so he can shield the ball well and his passing is damn good... I still remember in the game against Genoa how with his back to the goal he was able to find Borini. Even with all that being said I still think we haven't seen the best of him just yet I can't help feeling like he should play higher up the field probably in his favourite AM position so he doesn't have to always run back to defend. That way we can unlock his true genius and where his lack of pace isn't highlighted so much. In a way he reminds me a bit of Zidane and Iniesta especially in their ability to be able to almost never get pushed off the ball and supreme technique to get out of sticky situations. With all that said this guy is left footed which just makes him that more unique.

Great post Van....I have to give a shoutout to Hakan who rebounded very well from that terrible first half performance to get a goal. Long overdue great to see that this is a united bunch who did not fold and concede 2-3 more goals and lose this game as we had done in previous years. My MOM has to be Piatek I can't say enough about him but this guy is special he has primal instincts of knowing how to position himself and take advantage of defences to score. Worst player was probably Suso he is struggling and it shows hopefully he can find himself again because we definitely need him.
