The Rotterdam Derby

The Rotterdam Derby was traditionally the match between Feyenoord and Sparta. The last years the Derby wasn`t what it used to be, because Sparta didn`t have the team to make it Feyenoord really difficult. Feyenoord won both matches last year with 5-0, although lack of form. This summer Sparta got relegated, but instead, Excelsior got promotion to the Eredivsie. So now we`ve got a new Rotterdam Derby, between Feyenoord and Excelsior.

It`s going to be extra special, because Excelsior is Feyenoords satelliteclub. Excelsior has got a lot of Feyenoord youthplayers. Talents like Brett Holman (Australia), Michel Fernandes Bastos (Brazil) and Steve Olfers (Holland) are on loan from Feyenoord, or bought from Feyenoord with a restriction that gives Feyenoord the first right to buy them (back).

So next tuesday (1 september) this unique match will be played at De Kuip, in Rotterdam of course.

Guess you mean September 10th...

It's a little strange playing seriously against our 'Little Brother', normally I would want those guys at Excelsior to excel, but if they do it this time...

Curious about Bastos, wonder if he really is the best left wingback at Feyenoord (claimed by Dik (with a c somehere in the middle it spelled ****) van de Polder I believe)...

I hope Ecxelsior will do their utmost best, so no one can claim that it is false competition.

Needless to say I hope we pick up the three points

I'm sure they will. This is a perfect opportunity to prove that they are ready for Feyenoord.

DERBY TUESDAY AT THE KUIP

After two weeks of international commitments for both club and country, the Feyenoord squad gets back to home truths Tuesday with a clash that pits them against fellow Rotterdammers Excelsior. Coach Bert van Marwijk for one is fully cognizant of the need for a good performance from his own players against the Eredivisie newcomers. 'It’s gong to be a tough game, because those lads will be looking to show what they can do against Feyenoord.'
Van Marwijk is blessed in the personnel department, albeit that Patrick Paauwe and Bonaventura Kalou were both missing from Monday training. Kalou is stranded in Côte d’Ivoire waiting for a plane, while Paauwe was busy getting married. ‘But he’ll be playing tomorrow. Patrick is professional enough to know what’s expected of him against Excelsior. Kalou is another story. We’re doing everything in our power to get him to Holland with another operator. I cannot say whether we’ll manage it,’ Van Marwijk explained.

New recruits Sebastián Pardo, Mariano Bombarda and Chong-gug Song are available, although the coach is unsure whether he’ll use them. 'Bombarda has been here only two weeks and I hadn’t expected him to be as far along as he is. I don’t know whether I’ll include him. The same goes for Pardo. Song only arrived three days ago, so he definitely won’t be involved.' Thomas Buffel is the man most likely to partner Pierre van Hooijdonk up front.

After having picked up a point in their first two games, Excelsior know that anything they get from Tuesday’s game is a bonus. 'I would be satisfied with a draw,’ admitted coach Adri Koster. ‘But my players will be very motivated, because they want to show Feyenoord that they want to play in the Kuip too.’

PROBABLE TEAMS:
Feyenoord: Zoetebier; Gyan, Paauwe, Van Wonderen, Van Haaren; Emerton, Bosvelt, Ono, Lurling; Buffel en Van Hooijdonk
Excelsior: Malkowski; Olfers, Breuer, Swerts, Holman; Van Dieren, Mtiliga, Boutahar, Pinas; Lopes, Koswal

HOME:
21/9/1986 Feyenoord 5-0 Excelsior
3/11/1985 Feyenoord 2-1 Excelsior
25/4/1985 Feyenoord 2-1 Excelsior
30/10/1983 Feyenoord 4-0 Excelsior
16/1/1983 Feyenoord 1-0 Excelsior

AWAY:
5/4/1987 Excelsior 1-6 Feyenoord
27/4/1986 Excelsior 2-1 Feyenoord
4/11/1984 Excelsior 2-4 Feyenoord
15/4/1984 Excelsior 0-2 Feyenoord
22/8/1982 Excelsior 2-3 Feyenoord

We should be able to win, looking at strength of the squad and statistically. Although it shows that it has been a while ago both teams played each other in the league.

Too bad Kalou will probably not make it to the squad:

EXCELSIOR DOUBTS FOR KALOU

Feyenoord will probably be unable to count on Bonaventura Kalou in Tuesday’s game at home to Rotterdam neighbours Excelsior. A strike by French carrier Air France has left the forward stranded in home country Côte d’Ivoire while Feyenoord tries to find him a seat on an alternative flight. Kalou was in West Africa as part of the Côte d’Ivoire squad that took on South Africa in an African Cup of Nations qualifier.
The Feyenoord striker only played the first half of an uninspiring 0-0 draw that opened his country’s campaign in Group K, which also includes Burundi. Only the winner goes through.

Should Excelsior win though, we can always change squads

Although these matches where played long ago. There are two players from back then who will be involved tonight: Mario Been (assistant coach for Feyenoord) and Peter Houtman (stadionspeaker in De Kuip).

It`s a shame Kalou is not here, but it`s nice for Buffel to play against his old teammates. Also a shame that Bastos and Song will not be involved. I`m still hoping for Bombarda and especially Pardo to play.

It will be nice to see 19 Feyenoord-players in a single match.

I bet the odds were not that great

But congrats, it looks like you won some.

Especially nice to see Pardo coming in for Lurling in the 37th minute. He showed some great technique and scored a goal. Afterwards Van Marwijk was pretty harsh on Lurling. He said something like: I know he can play good football, but he better start showing it soon. I can not keep giving him chances, he's playing at Feyenoord now where the pressure is on every game. He even said he knew there might be consequences in getting him off the field, referring to even less confidence.

Bombarda scored his first goal as well

Here's the match report from http://www.feyenoord.com

SEB, MARIANO DEBUT, BOTH SCORE

Feyenoord were too strong for neighbours Excelsior Tuesday night at the Kuip, running out 4-1 winners in the third Eredivisie game of the season. Pierre van Hooijdonk started the ball rolling with two strikes early on, while debutees Seb Pardo and Mariono Bombardo came off the bench to put down their thing. Both ended up with a goal in an enjoyable encounter in front of a bumper 43,100 crowd.
Kalou made it back to Rotterdam at the end, but took his place on the bench as young Belgian Thomas Buffel started. Both Mariano Bombarda and Sebastian Pardo joined the Ivorian on the sidelines for the first time.

Pardo came into the action relatively early on, replacing a disappointing Anthony Lurling on 37 minutes. Feyenoord were already 2-1 up by then. Pierre van Hooijdonk had opened his account on eleven minutes, netting a penalty after Danny Buys handled in the box. The big man then doubled his haul, again from a dead ball situation, although this time from further out. You might think that the keepers of Europe would be getting the hang of Pierre’s free kicks by now, but Excelsior goalie Malkwoski certainly hadn’t been doing his homework, as Van Hooijdonk beat him from twenty-five metres to make it two-nil.

For a moment it looked like Feyenoord would put on a goal show, but it was the little brothers from the other side of Rotterdam who scored next. Holman and Lopes combined well on the right, and though Holman’s shot was parried by Zoetebier, Brian Pinas was on hand to score on his return to the Kuip.

Feyenoord still looked good for a few more goals however. Ono show his shot beaten out by Malkowski, Emerton pulled a drive just wide and Bosvelt went close after fine work from Buffel on the dead-ball line, but the home side was unable to make any serious headway and went in at the break 2-1 up.

The second half was seven minutes old when Buffel broke through on the left, pulling the ball back to Sebastian Pardo who had the relatively easy task of placing the ball between the posts for 3-1.

The seemed to knock the stuffing out of Excelsior, and the game ground towards its inevitable conclusion. One man wasn’t happy with the score however. The man who gave his idea of starting a hotel in Spain to play for the UEFA cup holders, Bombarda, joined the action with 20 minutes to spare, replacing the strong Gyan. The birthday boy (30 today) followed Pardo’s lead to net on his debut in the dying seconds for 4-1.

Feyenoord-Excelsior 4-1 (2-1)
11’ 1-0 Van Hooijdonk (pen)
14’ 2-0 Van Hooijdonk
24’ 2-1 Pinas
53’ 3-1 Pardo
90’ 4-1 Bombarda

Feyenoord: Zoetebier; Gyan (70’ Bombarda), Van Wonderen, Paauwe, Van Haaren; Emerton, Bosvelt, Ono, Lurling (37’ Pardo); Buffel (81’ Dos Santos), Van Hooijdonk.
Excelsior: Malkowski; Buys (55’ Martis), Olfers, Breuer, Mtiliga (79’ Bastos); Koswal, Swerts, Boutahar, Pinas; Holman (72’ El Hamdaoui), Lopes.

Great match, nice to see Pardo and Bombarda scoring in their first match.

A tragedy for Lurling, who now faces competition with Pardo. Furthermore, Van Persie and Van Marwijk will meet later this week to discuss Van Persie`s return. And hopefully Leonardo will be fit soon. So Lurling has to face heavy competition. The same goes for the right flank: Buffel played excellent last night. There is a possibility that he will keep his place. That means that Kalou will probably end up at his old position, and Emerton will be rightback again. But their is also are top signing Song. He `s a player for the right wing, just like Kalou and Emerton. I think Bosvelt is the only player on the right wing with a secure place in the team. So Van Marwijk faces some tough choices.
