Tyson focused on self, not Danish foe

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (October 5, 2001 12:09 PM EDT) -

Mike Tyson said Friday he's more concerned with his own condition than he is with watching video tapes of Brian Nielsen.

Tyson arrived in Denmark on Monday for the Oct. 13 fight against Nielsen, the first fight in nearly a year for the ex-heavyweight champ.

"I don't underestimate anybody. I don't underestimate him," Tyson said after his daily training session at a local gym where two dozen fans patiently waited for an autograph or a snapshot.

Tyson said he hadn't seen many video tapes of Nieslen and was concentrating on being physically ready for the fight.

"I just stay in good shape and good condition and I use that to fight well," he said.

The bout against Nielsen (62-1, 43 knockouts) is regarded as a major step toward another shot at the heavyweight title for Tyson (49-3).

Tyson, idle since last Oct. 20 when he stopped Andrew Golota in two rounds at Auburn Hills, Mich., said the time away from the ring would not be a handicap.

"I've been boxing and training a long time in the gym," he said. "I'm in good shape and boxing good and have good sparring partners."

On the undercard of the Tyson-Nielsen bout, American fighter Will McIntyre will challenge Britain's Joe Calzaghe for the WBO super-middleweight title. McIntyre, with 28 wins in 30 fights, has never been stopped, while Calzaghe is unbeaten with a 31-0 record.

"I've met Joe before and he's good man,' Tyson said. "I hope he does good in his fight."

Tyson to stay in Europe after fight

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (October 9, 2001 03:44 PM EDT) -

Mike Tyson is in no hurry to get back to the United States.

Citing tensions from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and this week's U.S. raids on Afghanistan, Tyson, a Muslim, said Tuesday that he might stay in Europe for at least a month after he fights Denmark's Brian Nielsen this weekend.

"It's just really hectic back home a little bit," the former heavyweight champion said. "I'm over here and I don't want to get caught up in the cross fire of going back home. So I'm just hanging out here for a minute.

"I might want to hang around Europe for a month or so. Just hang around, probably get a spot and go train there for the next fight, if I fight again. We'll see what happens. We'll see what happens, who knows."

Bettina Palle, who is promoting Saturday's fight at Copenhagen's Parken Stadium, said she would help Tyson stay in Denmark if that's what he wanted to do.

"It's evident that it could cause some practical problems, but we will have to solve them if Tyson and his people prefer to stay here," she told the tabloid Ekstra Bladet.

Tyson has talked infrequently with reporters since arriving, but has still managed to fill several pages daily in Copenhagen's two tabloid newspapers with outings to high-priced restaurants, a strip club, and reports of a busy nightlife.

This will be the first fight for Tyson (49-3) in almost a year since he faced Andrew Golota, with Golota quitting in the second round. Tyson's last three fights have lasted a total of just over 10 minutes.

Tyson said after the Golota fight he was retiring. And he suggested it again Tuesday.

"I still want to fight, but I don't know what I'm doing after this fight," he said.

Tyson, Nielsen put on pounds for Saturday's fight

Tyson tipped the scales at 239 pounds on Thursday, 17 more than a year ago in his last fight, against Andrew Golota. Tyson's previous high weight was 223 3/4 pounds, for his second-round victory over Julius Francis on Jan. 29, 2000, in Manchester, England.

Nielsen weighed in at his heaviest in three years, 259 3/4 pounds, as he goes into the biggest fight of his career Saturday before a partisan crowd expected near 47,000 at Parken Stadium.

Tyson's trainer, Tommy Brooks, has encouraged the former undisputed heavyweight champion to beef up. Four months ago, Tyson began training under Los Angeles-based fitness coach Gunnar Peterson, who has changed his diet and training routine.

Tyson (48-3, 2 no-contests, 42 KOs) stared at Nielsen during the weigh-in, saying only, "I'm ready to fight."

Nielsen is 62-1 with 43 KOs.

Tyson says he's in his best shape since being released from prison and returning to boxing in 1995.

"I feel in great condition now, and I just feel a whole lot different," Tyson said.

"I feel young, I feel vibrant, and when you're in condition, you want to do it. But when you're not in condition, you just want to throw it out the window."

Saturday is supposed to be another walkover, with Tyson in line for a title fight against the winner of the Nov. 17 bout between Hasim Rahman and Lennox Lewis. Facing the winner of the Evander Holyfield-John Ruiz bout also is a possibility.

Tyson usually fights in the 220-pound range.

I am completely undecided about what to think and hope for in this fight.

I am getting pretty tired of all the hype around esp. Tyson in the press here, and basically I just want that to stop so they can start concentrating on football again. Apart from that I kinda hope that Brian Nielsen looses big-time so we wont have to suffer
any more of his "big" fights. On the other hand, he is Danish and it would be cool to have a Dane create a major surprise like that

Concerning the fight itself I really don't see Brian Nielsen having a chance in a million of surviving the first three or four rounds.

Yep.......so right !!! He lasted more than what me and friends who saw the fight thought !!

Tyson is getting old quickly, bur he's still ripped and if he's given a chance for the title again I think, like he does, within a yr and a couple more bouts he can take on anyone..

Tyson Heads Toward Title Showdown

Updated: Mon, Oct 15 4:13 AM EDT

By STEPHEN WADE, AP Sports Writer

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - Mike Tyson won't say where he's going to set up a temporary training camp.

But one thing seems sure: His ultimate destination should be a bout against the winner of the Nov. 17 match between WBC-IBF champion Hasim Rahman and Lennox Lewis.

The Rahman-Lewis winner must make a mandatory World Boxing Council defense against the top available contender, and Tyson is ranked No. 1 despite not having fought in 51 weeks before Saturday.

The former undisputed champion hit Denmark's Brian Nielsen with a barrage of punches that few others could have taken. Nielsen, his bloody left eye nearly swollen shut, gave up while sitting on the stool just as the seventh round was about to start.

Tyson, a native New Yorker, wants to remain temporarily in Europe, but said he won't be staying Denmark. He denied he's setting up camp in France.

"Incorrect," he said when asked about France. "But I'm not telling you.

"I have no idea right now. I'm just taking a week off and then I'll go back into training."

Tyson verbalized the message his punishing victory over Nielsen delivered.

"I'm back," Tyson said

Danish Heavyweight Brian Nielsen, hits the canvas after being knocked down by Mike Tyson from the USA, Saturday Oct.13 2001. The non-title heavyweight fight took place at the Parken Stadium, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Nielsen was stopped after the sixth round after his left eye was closed and the boxer could not see.

Gossip from Denmark is that Tyson has bought a house in Denmark and that he's going to live there at least until March ....could this happen to have anything to do with a certain rape accusation?

I dont think Mr EarMuncher is done yet..I truly believe theres some dinamite left in his body, but he's very quickly running out of time.....I believe he can do it all again, provided its within a year to two at the most.
