Introduction, Conclusion and Clarification of The Series

The two series has been already established as my hobby and it was spent almost four months with a lot of efforts. I hope yous have enjoyed it and here is for clarification of these works.

Numbers and Format

There are eight threads in the series “The Greatest Footballers of All-Time In Various Positions” showing all-time ranking top 50 players in each position include all-time ranking top 5 players in basic four position in each era.

There are 43 threads in the series “All-Time International Squad” with more than 50 squads and around 1,000 players’ profiles with managers and stadiums. The only two zones aren’t included are South Asia and South East Asia because their too weakness in football. I'll do it as far as either of them can qualify for WC final in the future only.

You will be unable to find it anywhere except here only !!!

Inspiration

I start interesting history of football for two years ago after I feel beautiful game and world-class players had become fewer since the middle of the 2000s. I first seriously watched football in 1993 with England VS Holland in the 1994 World Cup qualification. I start establishing the thread of legends in Thailand webboard but it was unpopular due to thier negative attitudes about legends. Then, I moved to establish myself in legends room of soccerpulse.com and I ever did the similar to this kind of series but not formal with a lot of errors, omitted so many legends and not research much enough. More research more so much fun to know how interesting and great of football history leading me to be in the worldwide of vision. After that web was disappeared, I try to find soccer board with availability in legends room until Dagoods invited me to be here and I have to sincerely say Xtratime.org has fulfilled my desire. Here has got an impressive figure and there are incredibly so many experts in their country legends helping me to improve again and again. Additionally, Almost every guys have had a good attitude to my threads even there are some disagreement unavoidably.

In this occasion, I have to mention thanks for your supports and this series will never be completed if I have none of your opinions. Accordingly, I regarded this series are belonged to everyone not only me

Purpose

1. To fulfill my interest in legends
2. To collect the photos as the gallery of legends

Sources

1. Unseen Sources

I watched many old world cup games in Astrosport channel. I’ve accumulated knowledge from many guys from several nations in soccerpulse and here and I also have my consultant in thai who first watched football since 1977.

2. Books

The Global Art of Socccer is the only book I have read.

3. Internets

www.rsssf.com
www.pesdatabase.com
www.planetworldcup.com
www.wikipedia.com
www.playerhistory.com

These five are the majority sources to find profile of players

Criteria

Ability, Consistency, Greatness in every professional level of competition are combined to consider selection and ranking of players. This is the porportion of criteria to rank player.

Overall Abilities : 50 Percent
Performance In Club Level : 25 Percent
Performance In National Level : 25 Percent

Consistency is included in performance.

However, If they got big injury or won few caps not because of reasonable events, They will lose thier points from it unavoidably but it is limited for range of ability.

In the second series, Injury will not be an important factor to select player.

Morover, Ability points will be different when a player could be appeared in two threads consist of thier position and "The Greatest Footballers of All-Time"

Example : Gerd Muller is ranked higher than Ronaldo in striker position because there is more porportion in essential skills of striker and Ronaldo is also disadvantage for his injury. On the other hand, Ronaldo is ranked higher as the greatest ever because his a lot better in overall abilities than Gerd Muller. Another case is Maldini VS Beckenbauer. Even Maldini is better than Dair Kaiser in defensive skills but it is not much enough if compare the too different in overall abilities.

Reliability

This kind of works will never be called as a corrected works because it depends on proportion of factors we would give to them. Also, There is no possibility to exactly measure degree of players. But still, There are still many sources making poll for all-time ranking like the notable sources are UEFA Jubilee’s poll, World Soccer magazine and IFFHS but the poll was inevitably biased especially to player in recent decades. Example, Zidane won first place in UEFA Jubilee poll but most of experts have agreed Zidane should not be the better player than Johan Cruyff. Accordingly, This works is purposely done for most reliable as possible, and not biased a bit because I am from Thai and I also have not engaged myself and being disciple to cheer any team, just for fun to cheer some teams in some cases or the major tournaments. I positive that all-time international squad series is not less than 95 % of reliability about selection of players.

Comparision of Players In Different Era

This point is the most controversied. This kind of works would mostly be unacceptable as long as players have not played in the same factors. The fact of matter that so many thing has changed and developed. Consequently, Standard in each era is too different. On the other hand, There are some possibility to rank player with giving a true proportion to each standard. Similar to many sources showing and regarding Michel Platini has always ranked higher than Giuseppe Meazza or Ferenc Puskas higher than Stoichkov, etc. Example, Jose Nasazzi will never be even a good defender if he sit down the time-machine to play in this era but the legends would never be any meaning if we don't understand and give credit to thier greatness on thier own standard. Finally, Ranking is depend on my proportion to give in each factors but it still care about widely regardness of people as possible.

Classes of Players

Crown : One of The greatest footballers of all-time
King : One of the greatest footballers of all-time in their position
Queen : One of the greatest footballers of all-time in their position and era
Prince : The consistency international-class player
Princess : The consistency national-class player
Knight : Average player

Uncompleted Points

The only unfound photo (during they were still players) is;

Park Kyung-Hoon (Korea Replublic)

If yous could help me to find it would be so appreciated.

What is going on for these series ?

1. Improvement : This works is still open to change some points when there will be some reliable opinions or sources to support it or some points will be found mistakes.
2. Updating : There are many active players in this series so their profile will be updated in every seasons, and the future legends will beat some former players in all-time rankings or all-time squads.

Future Series

The next series "The Greatest Clubs and National Teams" is already planed to done but still not exactly time.

With so many silly stickness threads in the world forum... I think your thread and work should be a sticky one in XT.... so people and newbies can know about the history of the game and inform themselves better in football generally!

Well done mate, great effort .

Everyone will have their own opinions on teams/players/selections including myself but you've gone through a whole deal to put this together, good on ya.

Good point. Dearman or Dagoods, make these threads a sticky or bettter yet create a library forum for them. These threads could be the most extensively researched lists anywhere. I know football pretty well to 1950 or so, but I learened a lot about pre-war talent. Great stuff.

Dearman I had to join to say thanks for this. I think I saw something similar you did in a previous forum, a more dated version maybe?

Anyway I'm working on a custom database for Football Manager 2010 and this has been invaluable, I will credit you on its release. Naturally I have to rank things too so it helped a lot! Normally these lists you find you disagree with almost the whole thing but yours has been agreeable for the most part, more than others. Good knowledge!
