NEWCASTLE United are understood to be set for talks with Dutch youngster Virgil van Dijk – according to sources in Holland.
The Groningen defender is thought to be on the Magpies radar according to the Eredivisie club’s general manager Hans Nijland, who has confirmed Van Dijk is set for discussions with his agent Maarten Chin and United next month.
There has been no firm bid from Newcastle as yet. But the plot is thickening in terms of summer transfers for the Magpies with the close season just weeks away now for Alan Pardew and his board.
Van Dijk has made 22 appearances this season in the Dutch top flight, scoring three goals.
He is under contract until 2015 meaning a cash transaction would be needed to lure him to Tyneside.
Blackburn have also watched the 20-year-old defender this season on numerous occasions.
The defender – born in Breda – is already a Dutch Under-21 international and is expected to make the push on to the senior stage in the next few years.
Newcastle have also been linked with a move for Adam Maher of AZ Alkmaar,
but there are also a clutch of Premier League sides who have been impressed by the 18-year-old this season, including Aston Villa.
