Anthem
Letra: Gennaro Rodrigues

How it all started

Founded in 26th August 1914 by the italian colony of the city of São Paulo, with the name of Società Sportiva Palestra Italia. It's foundation happened because of the presence of Pro Vercelli and Torino in Brasil, motivating 4 young Italians (Luigi Cervo, Luigi Marzo, Vincenzo Ragognetti and Ezequiel Simone) to create a team for the Italian colony

The first match

On the first few months, football was only practised as some recreation activity between the club's associated in a rented pitch in Vila Mariana. This pitch is located where today is Vila Clementino, near the area of Parque Ibirapuera. In 24th January 1915, Palestra plays the first friendly against Savóia from Sorocaba and wins 2-0, goals from Bianco and Alegretti. The embled adopted to represent the club was the Cruz de Savóia.

Until the following year the team only played friendly matches. By that time and with the support of A.A. Palmeiras, the club managed to associate to the Associação Paulista de Esportes Atléticos, organization responsible for the football among the big paulista clubs. The debut on an official tourney happened on 13th May 1916 on A.A. Palmeiras' field which was known as Chácara Floresta, and the opponent on that opportunity was A.A. Mackenzie College. Match ended 1-1 and Palestra's starting line-up was Fabrini; Grimaldi, Rico; Fábio II, Bianco, De Biase; Gobbato, Valle II, Vescovini, Bernardini, Cestri. On the same year, Palestra managed to affiliate to Associação Paulista de Esportes Atléticos (APEA) to play the Campeonato Paulista. On 1917, the club's shirt change with the main change being the elimination of the white strip; meanwhile, the emblem changed to a circle with the intials "P" and "I". On the Campeonato Paulista of 1917, Palestra finished in 2nd place. On the same year Palestra faces for the first few times Corinthians, the club who would become their biggest rivals/freguês, winning 3x0 and 3x1.

And many glorious years followed...

Some websites say that Palmeiras are followed by the middle classes and the rich. Fair comment?

Why would one do that?
As far as I can understand, the whole point is to organise the Brazilian forum in a way that people following a certain team can refer to a certain thread, just like in all other areas of XT

São Paulo was generally cosidered the team of the rich class, but nowadays it's really hard to say anything as they've become popular in the last decade...

It wouldn't be wrong to say that Palmeiras is the team of the middle classes and specially for the people of Italian heritage, but considering that there are 10m+ supporters it's not necessarily the rule...

Anyway, today is Palmeiras' 92nd birthday, time to celebrate!!!

Palmeiras faz 92 anos

Just horrible... Should have lost it from more than 5-1 if it weren't for Diego...

Daniel should just retire...

Should be said that we should have had a pk for us when it was still 2-1 and before all the panic in our defense.

PS: A defeat like this might wake up our players, as that invincible run was hiding lots of mistakes in the team.

Finally a win!

Even though São Caetano ran at will on the holes among our centrebacks and if it wasn't for Cavalieri we would never made the comeback...

Besides him, Edmundo on the time he was on the pitch (deserved the goal: brilliant and cheeky "bico" finish!), Wendell who ran all over the pitch from start to finish and Chiquinho (was unfortunate on São Caetano's goal but all the merits should go to Marcelinho on it; anyway, distributed the ball pretty well splitting the defense and showed he is easily better than Michael, who isn't a bad player by any means it must be said) deserves mention.

Negative points goes to Juninho and Edmundo's behaviour when they were substituted and post-match... C'mon guys, get over it and look forward the next match!

Next match will be against Cruzeiro, Minas Gerais' Palestra Itália: always tough for me as a great part of my family support them. Usually a draw is very welcome, but on the present situation both need the win... =\

Oh dear, the ball just doesn't seem like going in for us today... Unbelievable missed chances (Cruzeiro missed some good chances too, but at least they scored that pk).

Must be said though that Martinez should never have been sent-off: like the other would say, somehow Bozano Jr. manages to be worse than his father at officiating matches.

And Diego is a monster: our academy has again done it. Best in the world for goalkeepers. :-)

3 balls on the crossbar and 3 plays that our players jinxed past the goalkeeper and shoot to the side net... Oh well, just wasn't our day.

Again it must be said though, that Bozano was awful and should never have sent the Cruzeiro player off: if we had tied, Cruzeiro could have complained with justice... But then we didn't.
