Hoult 'back' to business
By Oliver Bhurrut

RUSSELL Hoult claims the summer break has done his nagging back problems the world of good and insists: "I'm raring to go".

The Baggies No.1 battled through the pain barrier in the second half of last
season but, despite having an epidural in February, only missed two games
all term.

Hoult is now looking forward to Albion's second crack at the Premiership in
three years after recent Carling Cup successes against top-flight giants
Newcastle and Manchester United.

The 31-year-old shot-stopper said: "Pre-season is something to look forward
to and if we put the hard work in at the start of the season and hopefully
we'll reap the rewards at the end.

"I've done a little work over the summer to keep my legs going and I've had
a nice break.

"The pounding about on the hard grounds didn't help my back but the rest has
done me good.

"Rest seems to be the best thing for me at the moment but only time will
tell when we begin training, then we'll know more.

"I feel good and I've been playing a bit of golf which seems to have
loosened my back up. I'm confident but we'll see through the season.

"It's another big challenge for us. We'll be coming up against some big
sides but we faced a few last season, held our own and even beat a few."

Well its good to hear hes back (no pun intended) to full fitness. I hope he can keep it up.

But I think the club have a decent replacement in Joe Murphy ready in the wings, despite the fact that we were trying to sign a replacement in Steve Harper earlier this week.

Hoult on alert
By Oliver Bhurrut

RUSSELL Hoult admits the arrival of Tomasz Kuszczak will keep him on his
toes during the Baggies' Premiership return.

Speaking exclusively before Albion's first training session on their Denmark
tour today (Monday), the Hawthorns' No.1 revealed he first came across the
Polish international shot-stopper on a pre-season goalkeepers' course ten
days ago.

And Hoult, who kept 21 clean sheets last season, is now relishing the extra
competition back in the top flight, especially after his troublesome back
came through the sternest of tests on the week-long Stafford training camp.

"I met Tomasz first on the goalkeepers training course the week before
last," said the former Derby custodian.

"It's always good and healthy to have competition and we'll have to see how
it goes.

"I'm feeling all right at the minute.

"We did three sessions-a-day on the goalkeepers' course we were on, starting
at 9am with the last one finishing around 8.30pm.

"It was a tough week but productive and it's better for us than running.

"Running is okay to keep fit and keep the weight off but for keepers it's
not practical for football and playing matches.

"It's a good course and Fred Barber puts us through our paces.

"I'm looking forward to getting through the pre-season games now and taking
it one step at a time.

"The back feels really good - the best it's been for a while.

"The rest through the summer has done it good and the goalkeepers' training
course was probably the biggest test it could face all season."

Both Hoult and Kuszczak were the guinea pigs for the new Nike colour balls
on their training course.

The sports manufacturing giants have created a yellow ball which looks set
to be used in the Premiership this season during the dull winter days from
November.

And the Baggies duo, as well as Joe Murphy and Simon Miotto, were first to
get their hands on it along with the blue and white Nike ball used during
Euro 2004.

"The new balls are very quick and very light," Hoult remarked.

"They're easier to kick but they move all over the place.

"They also have lines all over them which spin around and are slightly
off-putting. But the more we use them the easier it will get for us.

"We used the new yellow ball and an orange one without lines on.

"We tested everything out for night games and experimented with lots of
different Nike balls."

WEST BROMWICH, England (AP) -West Bromwich Albion suspended goalkeeper Russell Hoult on Friday after a series of lurid newspaper articles about his private life.

The 34-year-old Hoult had been the club's first-choice goalkeeper since Tony Mowbray took over as manager of the League Championship team in October.

"Goalkeeper Russell Hoult has been suspended by West Bromwich Albion pending further inquiries by the club into newspaper articles this week,'' West Brom said in a statement.

Pascal Zuberbuhler is expected to replace Hoult in Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round match at Wolves.

Hoult was allegedly filmed on a mobile phone having sex with a woman, who was not his wife, with another man also present.
