Rabah Madjer

Hi, I was wondering if any Porto fans could give me an insight into Madjer's career in Portugal.

How was he noticed by the club, as he was playing 2nd division football when he signed by Porto.

When did he make his debut?

he was at the time the one of the best foreigner players playing in Portugal, his famous for the back heal goal the won the CL cup, against Bayern Munchen

Thats all good, but anyone remember his time at FC Porto, his debut how he arrived, how was he signed, he was only playing in the French second division?

Hi there,

Rabah Madjer is one of greatest player in football history. The fact that he was not European did not help to make him as known as he would have deserved to be. The same thing would have happened to Zidane if he has chosen to play for Algeria instead of France. He is a French/Algerian player as you might know.
To give an insight of the Algerian football which is going badly down thanks to the people at the FA people who do not have a clue about football.
Algeria produced many great footballers like Mekhloufi in the 50s who was playing for St Etienne, Dahled (PSG) Madjer (Porto) Benarbia (Man City, PSG, Monaco)...etc. If you ask Kevin Keegan about Benarbia here what he will say :http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/africa/africans_abroad/1917031.stm

Algeria took part in the world cups of 1982 and 1986 and in 82 they have beaten the mighty Germans, in fact Algeria and Italy were the only 2 countries that stopped Breitner, Rumminige, Schummacher...etc and it was partly thanks to a certain 23 year old Rabah Madjer.
Madjer started as a kid in small club that belonged to a dairy products company in one of Algiers district, then moved to a first division Nasr Hussein Dey (NAHD) and after the world cup in Spain he attracted a lot of interest and everybody was surprised that he signed for Racing Clus de Paris that was in the french first division when he joined and things went badly wrong for the team and Madjer got injured and they did not manage to avoid relegation, so he played few games in the French 2nd division, but everyboy knew that he did not belong to that kind of football. Then a Portuguese agent spotted him and got him to play for Porto. On his first game and against one of Porto's bitter rivals (Boavista) he only needed few minutes to introduce himself to the Porto fans who adored him and still adore him until now. In one word he became one of Porto's and Portugal greatest football legends. On that day Porto was loosing 1-0, Madjer scored twice, final score 2-1.
Then came 1987, where he was voted best footballer in the world and rightly so as he helped Porto to win the CL cup against Bayern with that back heel goal, the league, the cup and the Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo and he was decorated by the Portuguese State for what he offered to the Portuguese Football

Madjer is a true Porto legend. I remember when I was a kid in the 80s, when we were playing football in the street we all wanted to be either Madjer or Futre. He's definitely in the heart of every Porto fan.

Btw, in 1987 Madjer wasn't voted best player in the world. Gullit was and Futre came in 2nd. Since Futre joined Atlético Madrid in the 1987/88 season, Madjer became the undisputed star of the team (Gomes, twice european top scorer was getting older) ad his legend only grew when he scored a goal from the midfield line in the Intercontinental Cup, in the peak of a snow storm.
