Chelsea 'agree deal' with Porto's André Villas-Boas over manager's job'

• André Villas-Boas 'has accepted Chelsea offer'
• Roman Abramovich said to have offered coach €5m a year

Chelsea have agreed to pay the release clause for the Porto manager André Villas-Boas, according to reports in Portugal, and the coach has accepted the Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich's offer.

Villas-Boas will earn €5m (£4.4m) a season, the exact salary José Mourinho earned at the west London club, according to Jornal de Notícias. Chelsea will also pay the €15m (£13.2m) release clause.

Villas-Boas has already informed Porto of his decision to leave for the English club, a source linked to the process told the Agência.

On Sunday the Porto president Pinto da Costa said that "if a club pay the €15m and if he wants to leave FC Porto can't do anything about it. Apparentely, André Villas-Boas is willing to leave the 'dream job' [a reference to how Pinto da Costa described his position at Porto] to go to London and work at club where he was with José Mourinho".

Villas-Boas led Porto to the domestic double and Europa League success last term and Chelsea are looking to fill the vacancy created by the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti at the end of last season.

Abramovich may leave €45m in the coffers at Porto's Dragão stadium. According to A Bola, the Chelsea owner wants to take Falcao to London as a sweetener for Villas-Boas's signature.

Chelsea have also been in negotiations with Guus Hiddink about returning to the club he briefly managed in 2009. Chelsea have been talking with Hiddink about taking either the coach's job or the sporting director role – should he take on the latter then there would also be room for Villas-Boas to take a position at the club.

You are selling Chelsea way short. They were the 2nd best team in England last year inspite of the epic ****up. Expect a rejuvenated Lampard and Drogba this season.

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has claimed it would be feasible for Andre Villas-Boas to remain as Blues boss for '10 or 15 years'.

The 33-year-old was named as Carlo Ancelotti's successor in June, signing a three-year contract after resigning as the manager of Porto.

Chelsea have only lost once in 10 games under Villas-Boas' stewardship, and currently sit in third place in the Barclays Premier League - three points behind Manchester United and Manchester City.

But, should the Portuguese fail to land any silverware come may, he could see himself facing the wrath of Roman Abramovich - just like six coaches before him.

However, Buck is of the opinion that Chelsea need to stick with one manager in order to emulate the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal, who have succeeded due to the faith shown in Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

And, says Buck, Villas-Boas could be the right person to provide the west London club with the stability and longevity they so crave.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has been charged with improper conduct by the FA.

The charges relate to comments made about referee Chris Foy, who sent both Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa off in the first half of Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat at QPR in October.

Both challenges were viewed to be straight red cards by the referee, leading to Villas-Boas claiming the official was not in control of the game and that he was not up to the standard of a London derby.

Villas-Boas said after the game: "The ref was poor, very very poor. And it reflected in the result.

"I spoke to him at the end and I was very aggressive to him. I don't care if he's okay or not. Everyone can have a bad day, but this was not a bad day for us. It was a good day for us and a bad day for the referee."

Villas-Boas has been given until 4pm on November 15 to respond to the charges.

Ancelotti: Blame players, not AVB
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPNsoccernet staff

Former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has warned his former club that Andre Villas-Boas is not a "miracle worker" and needs to be given time to overhaul an ageing team at Stamford Bridge.

Tuesday's Carling Cup defeat by Liverpool was Villas-Boas' fifth loss in his last nine matches and the Portuguese's future at Chelsea has been thrown into doubt.

The former Porto boss - who won the Europa League, the Portuguese Liga title, as well as the Portuguese Cup last season - now faces three games in nine days against Newcastle, Valencia and Manchester City that could decided his fate.

However Ancelotti, who was sacked by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich at the end of the 2010-11 season, claims his successor is not to blame, it's the players he inherited.

"Villas-Boas cannot work miracles," Ancelotti said. "This is an old team now."

"It is exactly the same team as the one I left, with the exception of Juan Mata and Raul Meireles. The problem is not Villas-Boas, it is with the team that he has.

"Andre is young and inexperienced, but he has done well and he is talented. I feel Roman (Abramovich) needs to give him time to sort it out and make his ideas work."

The former AC Milan coach added: "The problem is in the organisation and with the players - all the things that they have to change to make it better.

"Maybe he does lack experience. But they knew that when they appointed him. He needs time."

Villas-Boas, 34, has just two seasons of managerial experience in club management, at Porto and Academica de Coimbra.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas will take his team on a five-day break to Majorca next week, according to the Daily Mail.

Villas-Boas is reportedly hoping the trip will help with team-bonding as new signings such as defender Gary Cahill look to settle into the squad.

The 26-year-old eventually completed his move to Stamford Bridge on Monday from Bolton, for a fee believed to be in the region of £7 million, after the player's wage demands had initially proved a stumbling block to the transfer.

It will also take the Blues away from London ahead of a potentially heated FA Cup fourth round tie against QPR the following weekend.

Chelsea captain John Terry is due to appear before West London Magistrates' Court shortly after the match, on February 1, to face a criminal charge of using racist language towards QPR defender Anton Ferdinand, who he could meet again at Loftus Road.

Villas-Boas will ensure his players are worked hard in Spain, however, with strict training schedules and an 11pm curfew planned, according to the report.

28m Euro down the drain if you can him... paid 15m for his release, 4m for his coaching staff, and he's owed another 9m after this year on his contract.

Not really comparable to the loss made if Chelsea dont make it into CL next season specially considering Chelseas revenue streams and the coming FFP rules. One man wrecking ball.

Andre Villas-Boas is on the verge of the sack and Chelsea already have Rafa Benitez lined up to take over the reins before Tuesday’s FA Cup replay with Birmingham, according to The Mail on Sunday.

The former Liverpool and Valencia manager will only settle for an 18-month deal but so far he has only been offered the role until the end of the current campaign. The reason for a short-term contract is understood to be because Abramovich wants to secure the services of current Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola in the summer.

Sacked, results have been shocking but feel he should have been given more time.

Viva John terry, lamps etc- many more years to come with them controlling the dressing room, to the detriment of the team.

To pay 15million for a manager then sack him 6 months later is ridiculous.

Every cloud though. Hiddink will be coming in to sort the mess.

Still think avb will have a great career.
