Chelsea 'agree deal' with Porto's André Villas-Boas over manager's job'

• André Villas-Boas 'has accepted Chelsea offer'
• Roman Abramovich said to have offered coach €5m a year

Chelsea have agreed to pay the release clause for the Porto manager André Villas-Boas, according to reports in Portugal, and the coach has accepted the Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich's offer.

Villas-Boas will earn €5m (£4.4m) a season, the exact salary José Mourinho earned at the west London club, according to Jornal de Notícias. Chelsea will also pay the €15m (£13.2m) release clause.

Villas-Boas has already informed Porto of his decision to leave for the English club, a source linked to the process told the Agência.

On Sunday the Porto president Pinto da Costa said that "if a club pay the €15m and if he wants to leave FC Porto can't do anything about it. Apparentely, André Villas-Boas is willing to leave the 'dream job' [a reference to how Pinto da Costa described his position at Porto] to go to London and work at club where he was with José Mourinho".

Villas-Boas led Porto to the domestic double and Europa League success last term and Chelsea are looking to fill the vacancy created by the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti at the end of last season.

Abramovich may leave €45m in the coffers at Porto's Dragão stadium. According to A Bola, the Chelsea owner wants to take Falcao to London as a sweetener for Villas-Boas's signature.

Chelsea have also been in negotiations with Guus Hiddink about returning to the club he briefly managed in 2009. Chelsea have been talking with Hiddink about taking either the coach's job or the sporting director role – should he take on the latter then there would also be room for Villas-Boas to take a position at the club.

Chelsea target Andre Villas-Boas resigns from Porto job

Chelsea target Andre Villas-Boas has tendered his resignation as Porto coach, the Portuguese club have said.

They made the announcement in a statement to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission.

Villas-Boas, 33, has been linked with Chelsea in recent days following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti in May.

Porto insisted on Monday that Villas-Boas could leave if a rival club paid £13.2m to activate a release clause in his contract.

"FC Porto was today notified of the intention of Andre Villas-Boas to resign from his contract with the club by triggering the release clause immediately," read a Porto statement.

"The contract will be terminated once the required amount is paid."

The Lusa news agency had reported earlier on Tuesday that Villas-Boas would pay the £13.2m himself.

Villas-Boas guided Porto to a treble last season, winning both the league and league cup as well as the Europa League.

Porto ended last season unbeaten in the league, with 27 wins in 30 matches, becoming only the second Portuguese club to finish a league season unbeaten, after Benfica in 1972-73.

Honestly, the Benfiquista in me thanks you, but the resonable football fan in me thinks your crazy if you think Benfica was better then Porto last season. Porto was MUCH better then us, and in my opinion last season if they played in any league other then Spain, they would have won that championship also. Congrats Chelsea you picked the right person for the job, I have no doubt trophies await Chelsea starting this upcoming season...This guy is special

You've paid an additional 4m Euro to take two staff members along with AVB, since all of Porto's coaches have a 2m release clause (except Vitor Pereira his assistant who was just named new manager, had an 8m release clause).

AVB - 15m Euro
Joao Mario(fitness) - 2m Euro
Daniel Sousa(opposition scout) - 2m Euro

19m Euro has been deposited into Porto's account, confirmed by our sporting director, Antero Henrique.

yes but who knows what compensation agreement or sale of players will be reached to offset these generous clauses, am sure chelsea didnt pay 2mn for a scout and thats it...interesting to hear AVB offered to pay his clause himself to leave...

You guys haven't announced it yet in England?

Porto already communicated it to the stock exchange, saying AVB paid his release clause as well as that of the two coaches. Then we put another communication an hour ago to announce the new manager.

You think he came up with 15m himself?

Do you not know how buyouts work?

Chelsea confirm Villas-Boas interest

Chelsea hope to appoint Andre Villas-Boas as their new manager, the Barclays Premier League club confirmed on Tuesday night.

Villas-Boas tendered his resignation with the Portuguese champions earlier on Tuesday and the confirmation of the receipt of the compensation payment - reported to be €15million - paves the way for the Portuguese coach to move on to a new club.

Andre Villas-Boas Factfile

Chelsea evening on Tuesday confirmed their intention to install the 33-year-old as the replacement for Carlo Ancelotti, who was unceremoniously axed at the end of last season just 12 months after guiding the club to a league and FA Cup double.

"We note that the release clause of Andre Villas-Boas has been activated," a Chelsea club statement read.

"We can at this time confirm our interest in him and hope to reach agreement with him on personal terms and make a further announcement in the near future."

Porto confirmed in a statement to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission, that the full buy-out clause had been met by Villas-Boas himself, although it is likely to have come via the deep pockets of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who has already spent millions in cutting short contracts of previous managers and players.

The statement read: "FC Porto, in accordance with Article 248 paragraph 1 of the Securities Code, hereby informs the market they have received from Mr Andre Villas-Boas the amount provided for in clause to terminate his employment contract."

It added that all that remained to sort out were the formalities of the termination of the contract.

Porto have moved swiftly to appoint a replacement coach, with Vitor Pereira stepping up into the hotseat after apparently turning down the chance to move to England with Villas-Boas.

It had appeared that Guus Hiddink - who enjoyed a successful spell as caretaker boss at Chelsea in 2008-09 and continues to enjoy a close relationship with Abramovich - was set to take up a sporting director role at Stamford Bridge once his exit from the Turkish Football Federation was agreed, with compensation set at around £4million.

However, it now seems that scenario failed to get off the ground as Chelsea turned their attentions to appointing an up-and-coming coach to oversee first-team affairs.

Villas-Boas would certainly fit the bill after guiding Porto to domestic and Europa League success last season. He is also no stranger to the west London club, having worked there under Jose Mourinho.

One of his first moves as the new Blues boss could be to sign Porto's star striker Falcao, the £25million-rated Colombian having impressed as the Dragons won the Europa League final at Dublin's Aviva Stadium, where the 25-year-old netted the only goal against Braga.

That could then signal the departure of Didier Drogba, with AC Milan said to be ready to offer the veteran Ivory Coast striker a fresh start in Italy.

Ray Wilkins, who served as Ancelotti's assistant until he was dismissed by Chelsea in November last year, felt Villas-Boas deserved his chance but believes he has a difficult job on his hands should he join the Blues.

He told Sky Sports News: "We've had lots of older coaches come in at Stamford Bridge and (they) have not done as well, so we have to give this young man the credit for what he has done up to now.

"We'll see where it goes from here. Obviously to knock Barcelona off their perch as the kings of Europe...we'll have to see where they go. They have taken a lot of time since Carlo was deposed as coach, so therefore they want someone in, they want someone to get cracking and let's get on with the job.

"Let's give the young man a chance, he's obviously done exceptionally well. His man-management skills from what I can read from the players he has worked with have been first-class. That will be required at Stamford Bridge because these are big players, big guys, very nice men I've got to say, and it will be very interesting to see how this young man goes on."

good news, hopefully he gets a full chance and unlike Scolari instead of sacrificing the coach to please a few old players they sacrifice the players...

Scouting opposition - preparing tactics to nullify any dangerous they might pose and preparing the best plan to beat em.

Welcome back Andre, may your tenure at Chelsea be longer then your first time here

One of his scout reports leaked, I remember hearing on the Guardian football podcast when talking about Villas-Boas. Unsure if it's been shared on here before but it's an interesting look into how well he analyses football

Congratulations.

Best of luck Andre, we wish you nothing but success despite the ugly break-up. You are still Portista through and through and will make us proud.

I've always preferred Chelsea over other English clubs since Jose went there, or even after he left, but this will only make me support your club even more. I wish nothing but success and trophies.
