Yes where is the rain/snow promised, the rivers and lakes and running dry in England at the moment.

About the 'funniest' surprise I've had in the last few months, was my baby daughter taking off her nappy full of the brown stuff and lobbing over her bedroom, and looking as pleased as punch. Not sure that would go down too well as a picture, but it was a BIG SURPRISE!

Sorry, kat. Us New Yorkers seemed to have sent all the blizzardS and slush across the Atlantic this past winter. My neighbours were walking around in tank tops on New Year's day

Indeed, the photo contest has taken on a life of her (its?) own. Every once in a while, a little imp with green antennae would post a global announcement for a new competition and each one of us clicked, sometimes more than once daily, until the week before submission deadline...

For a while I thought that the theme of this contest was 'Spring', so I had actually gone out into the forest the past few days to take pictures of green leaves sprouting from branches and capture images of mighty wooden giants that were slain by the savage winds of winter, only to find out that the theme is actually 'surprise, surprise'. Well, quod erat demonstrandum.

One day I was on my lunchbreak, taking a stroll, and I felt something touching my leg. I looked down to find a cat looking up a me and rubbing itself against my legs, presumably trying to get warm on a cold winter's day.

Last week I had a meeting in the central Dutch city of Utrecht. I was badly prepared and didn't even know who I was supposed to be meeting with. When I arrived and looked up at the building, I wondered if it would turn out to be the passengers on board the flying saucer that had just crashed into the bulding.

As a bicycle friendly country, Holland has special 'parking space' available for bikes. You'll find these everywhere, but the largest concentration is usually near public transport stations. Bicyles have many advantages; they require no fuel, you can't get stuck in traffic with them, riding them means exercising while you're commuting. But there is one huge disadvantage to them... rain. Even if you're not on them when it's raining, the seat gets wet when it's standing outside. So a common trick is to cover the seat with a plastic bag, or with a specially designed seat cover. In this case an advertising company was nice enough to put such a cover on each of the seats of all the bikes parked outside the train station. Quite a nice surprise for the passengers coming back from work that day.

1. Cheese it! I was quite surprised of my self that I have never been to Gouda (Holland) before. So this week I decided to take a look and was pleasantly surprised by the lovely old city center.



2. Hello Peter! Been living for so many years here in Rotterdam, and still get surprised at times of what can be found in this city, like this statue of Peter the Great!!



3. Floating surprise While traveling through Thailand in November I was quite surprised by seeing a Vietnamese style boat floating by.
