I think that the 1998 team may be, in hindsight, OUR GOLDEN GENERATION; the fact is that they were poorly managed by Sampson and failed to reach their potential.

I always thought that the explanation given for Harkes’ omission from the team was suspect … He was disruptive, and refused to play right-back in support of the team. That’s not enough reason to omit a team’s captain.

To think back on the lead in to that WC, the result v. Austria may have given US(A)/Sampson too much hope re: the formation. Winning that game reinforces Sampson’s view that he had gotten it right, but what he failed to note was that 2 of the 3 goals scored came in stoppage time, when the Austrians were pushing for the equalizer, and for most of the match we were defending. (after all we were playing with 10 … defenders). He used that result to force feed his 4-5 1 or 3-6-1 formation on the 1998 team.

The problem I’m having with the Monday morning quarterback that is Mr. Sampson, is that I still don’t think he gets it. What I learned from Lippi’s Italian run in 2006 is that the manager must evaluate his players and create a formation based on the “STRENGHTS OF HIS PLAYERS”, and not to create the formation and “FORCE” the team to meet “HIS STANDARDS”.

I hope WE’ve learned OUR lesson

I know there is a NY Cosmos thread here somplace but how is it that the Cosmos are playing ManU tomorrow in a testimonial to Paul Scholes...I'm totally lost on this!
