France has just become thier best history of football in the late 1990s that they won the first World Cup after the failure disqualifying in the two previous tournaments. They have three golden era. The first is the 1950s, Fontaine, Kopa, Piantoni and Jonquet formed the team to win third place in World Cup 1958. They have to wait until the 1980s that the magic square which is consist of Platini, Tigana and Giresse led France as one of the best team in Europe in that era. In the late 1990s to the early 2000s, They have many primitive Africans race, helped team to be the strogest team in the World after they have identity in elegant football before this era. Although French has not been popular in football the same as most nations in Europe but they still have the great legends of the World like Platini and Zidane.

Explanation of Formation

Goalkeeper and back four from The 1998 World Cup Champion France national team have been regarded as one of the best back lines in history of the game and increase its ability with naming Amoros in left-back instead of Lizarazu. Tigana beat Vieira in vision ability. Zidane is on the left midfielder as he played this position for Real Madrid. Kopa was versatile player, could run as winger as well and he is best on the right. Platini played behind two strikers would score many goals as he was a great scorer and assister, but he has to operate in midfield area before go attacking in this formation. Henry occasionally ran out to keep the ball in left-wing area. Sometimes this formation could be 4-4-2 with Henry as left-winger and Kopa as right-winger. Blanc will support attacking game in the suitable time. Fontaine just wait the ball to finish scores.

damn...seriously, hats off to you man...
not only have you listed the 22 man squad, not only the perfect manager...but also the best Frenchies according to their respective positions...
that's magnificent

little differing opinion here...i would remove one of Fontaine or Henry and push platini up..and place another midfielder in the center..maybe Makalele? or Tigana?

#3 ·
Great work ! Though, i am not sure Ribéry has achieve as much as other to deserve to be in the reserve squad, yet. Sagnol should be higher than a guy like Abidal and Evra aswell.

#11 ·
Mexes (11 caps) over Christian Lopez (39 caps) who was CB of the all conquering St Etienne side of the 70's or Basile Boli (50 caps) CB for the best team in Europe late 80's/early 90's.

It is very commendable what you are doing and don't take this the wrong way.

I have mentioned in hsitory of football room that this series is not the best team for national level performance of players but includes all great players in thier country regardless of how much thier caps if they is great enough. You can see I include Ribery despite he was caps less than Pires so far but Ribery is a lot the better player than Pires in abilities. Ribery was rated by kicker in Germany as The two years World-class player.

indeed, dearman did a great job.

if i can add someone, i would name : anelka. hope he will show his immense talent for this WC. too bad he didn't have the oppornuty to show it sooner.

Great work, as usual !

You forgot one player : Jean Djorkaeff (Youri's father). He captained France numerous times in the 60's and he was a great fullback (usually left-back). I think he should be mentioned in your full-back list, probably at the 5th spot, behind Marche and ahead of Angloma.

Gerard Janvion also deserves to be mentioned in your centre-back list and how can Battiston be lower than Leboeuf ?

Also, I would pick Michel Hidalgo as my coach anyday of the week !

Keep on the good work Dearman. It's always a pleasure to read you.

#18 ·
Nice list except you forgot about Youri Djorkaeff, who was a crucial factor in France's rebuilding process after missing out on WC '94 and during their major tournaments.

I'll go for formation A but replace Kopa with Youri Djorkaeff. Kopa was a fantastic player though.

As for rankings, I think the entire French defence should be King Golds. They're one of the best defenses ever, imo.

P.S. It's Patrick Vieira. He wasn't featured too much in WC '98 because of Didier Deschamps but he would fit in nicely into formation A.

After I have considered again, I still save Arsene Wemger as Manager of France. Hidalgo won Euro 84 and Reaching 1991 Eyropean Cup final with Marseille but his managing career was rather short. I consider consistency of Managers as well.

#26 ·
OK that's fine.
I would pick Hidalgo because he litterally rebuilt the French team in the late 70's and because I like his very offensive game-plan... and because he's my neighbour in Marseille :smileani:.

Thinking about it I think Jacquet would also be a fair choice and would be a good compromise between Hidalgo and Wenger - like Hidalgo he rebuilt the French team and had great success with it and like Wenger he had a good club carreer as a manager in the 80's with Bordeaux (3 French leagues, 2 French cups, 1 CL semi-final).

#28 ·
I'd say I will add Squad B in the future when France would have more great players. I think I have players great enough for a half number of Squad B so I have added Formation C.

#29 ·
Thanks, but I'll go for your Formation A with Djorkaeff in midfield instead of Kopa in midfield. Looks deadly, if each player was at their best.

As for Djorkaeff:-

This might bring a smile to some of the French fans here. :)

I added more four players to be already a half of squad B.

I select Bosquier instead of Battiston because Bosquier is regarded as the best French footballer in the 1960s, and I don't think Battiston was a world-class defender.

Julien Darui is selected as GK. He was one of the best GK in the Europe during the 1930s but he was very short just 168 cm.

In the near future, If France would have more great players enough, I'll eastablish the rest of half squad fore sure. Nicolas Anelka, Jean Nicolas and Battiston are already great enough to be reserved beforehand.

the best French XI i have watched -

------------------Henry-----------Papin--------------------

------Djorkaeff-----------Zidane-----------Ribery-----------

--------------------------Vieira----------------------------

-----Lizarazu-------------------------------Thuram--------

----------------Blanc-------------Desailly------------------

-------------------------Barthez---------------------------

shame there isn´t room for Basile Boli on CB.

On of the most intimidating and toughest CB I´ve ever seen.

Boli decided 92/93 Champions League final, scoring the only goal of OM vs Milan.

Plus he invented headbuts :proud:
(vs Stuart Pearce of England on Euro ´92)
