He is certainly jewish, but was told not to advertise the fact while at Lazio.
As far as I remember the whole mess around him started because the Lazio Ultras mistakenly thought the guy's a jew, hence all the demonstrations and other racist crap.

I would advise you to look up what you can on the old Hakoah team from Vienna. They were a dominant force in Austrian football in the 1920s before the Nazi takeover of Austria a decade later. They were a very good Jewish club, a team that did world tours, even back in that era, and instead of advertising their brand, they advertised Jewish pride and Zionism. They gave empowerment to the idea of Muskeljdentum, or the strong Jew. They were also the first continental team to win against an English club on English soil, when they defeated West Ham 5-1 in the mid-20s. Besides Tottenham and Ajax, the Hungarian club MTK has very strong Jewish connections after being founded by a Jewish businessman and having a core of Jewish players throughout the early part of their history, up until around World War II. The club, which has been successful in Hungary, and is one of the top teams there, still maintains its Jewish identity to this day and has thusly come under fire from many other clubs supporters in Hungary.
I got alot of this information from Franklin Foer's How Soccer Explains the World, from the chapter titled "How Soccer Explains the Jewish Question." And even if anyone else is not interested in the Jewish topic, there are a bunch of other enjoyable topics to read about, a solid read.
