South Africa 2010 - Provisional list of seeds
Assuming the WC place allocation stay the same, the highest ranked teams qualify from each confederation (play-offs included) and FIFA uses the same formula ( pdf file) to determine the seeds, the seeded teams for South Africa 2010 would be:

Pot 3: Australia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Iran, Japan, Mexico, USA, Uzbekistan
Pot 4: Cameroon, Colombia, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Nigeria, Paraguay, Uruguay

FIFA has annouced that it will not use the same formula and will change the rankings before the seeding for the next World Cup starts.

Hence the word provisional.
It can't change that much. Half of the formula is WC performance and that won't change. The other half is an average of relative FIFA Rankings (December 2007, December 2008 and November 2009).
Anyway, here's the current seeding list:
Code:
Total WC FIFA
1 Brazil 61.3 29.3 32
2 Italy 58.3 27.3 31
3 England 54.3 26.3 28
4 Germany 54.3 30.3 24
5 France 52.3 23.3 29
6 Spain 51.3 25.3 26
7 Argentina 51.0 21.0 30
8 Portugal 47.3 22.3 25
9 Netherlands 41.7 14.7 27
10 Switzerland 35.3 15.3 20
11 Ukraine 34.7 16.7 18
12 Mexico 34.3 19.3 15

I hope Portugal skips over Spain somehow, I can't see why Spain deserve to be seeded again. When's the last time they won against a decent nation in a WC game - Was it Denmark in 86?

i'd say the hosts plus all the wc winners ever should be the seeds. yes, that includes uruguay if they make it. if they don't, give it to portugal or spain. finito.

In seed 1 South Africa will replace Mexico, no more changes.
Other seeds are quite changible.
The process should depend on world ranking alone ( its not fair too, tho ) , not from which continent the team is coming.

I was talking about Denmark 86? The side which looked like potential WC winners in the group stages.. 6-1 vs Uruguay, Beating West Germany (who almost went on to win the thing)... That's a big step up from the likes of Paraguay.
