Before Euro 2012, I said that I wouldn't rule out a 2nd place finish, even with an injured Stevan Jovetic. As it turns out, we did indeed get second place in what turned out to be a memorable campaign.

This time, the expecations will be higher. Although they don't scare me one bit, I think it is nearly guaranteed that England gets a top 2 finish in this group, so I think it's going to be a dogfight for the other place. It'll be hard to get maximum points in Poland and Ukraine, so it will be imperative that CG get all the point points vs. Moldova and try to win as close to 7-0 as possible in each game against San Marino.

I have faith in the team, though. Jovetic is turning into one of Europe's brightest stars, Mirko has seen a bit of a revival, and the supporting cast is hungry to prove themselves, too. I never ever question the heart of this team.

I want to hear the anthem in Brazil!

Antivari and others, post away!

Brnovic will release his squad list for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and England this Thursday.

There are reports that Branko Boskovic will most certainly be apart of Brnovic's squad released tomorrow, the first time he will be included in over a year.

A big plus for us for sure as i believe he is our most creative midfielder and possesses a calming presence, something that we will need in these type of big games coming up.

The squad list has been announced and there are no real big surprises. As expected, Branko Boskovic has been re-instated to the team, while despite their off field problems, Simon Vukcevic and Milan Jovanovic have both been included as well. Two debutants from the previous squad, Blazo Igumanovic and Milos Krkotic have also been included.

Overall, a strong squad that should get the 3 points against Moldova and cause England some problems in Podgorica once again. The likes of Basa, Pavicevic, Volkov, Drincic and Boskovic did not play in our previous encounter with the English, so barring any injuries up until the game, we will have a much stronger team than last time in our 2-2 home draw.

Brnović vratio Boškovića, poziv i Milanu Jovanoviću

odbrana - Savo Pavićević (Hapoel, Tel Aviv), Milan Jovanović (Crvena zvezda), Vladimir Božović (Mordovija Saransk), Marko Baša (Lil), Stefan Savić (Fiorentina), Miodrag Džudović (Spartak Naljčik), Ivan Kecojević (Gaziantepspor) i Blažo Igumanović (Rudar)

vezni red - Vladimir Volkov (Partizan), Nikola Drinčić (Krasnodar), Mitar Novaković (Amkar), Simon Vukčević (karpati), Branko Bošković (Rapid Beč), Elsad Zverotić (Jang bojs), Milorad Peković (Grojter firt) i Miloš Krkotić (Dačija),

Some comments from Brnovic's press conference today. He explained his inclusion of Boskovic and Jovanovic in the squad and also said that although he would be satisfied with 4 points from the two games, we are aiming for 6. That's what i love to hear

Unbelievable.

Just hours after Brnovic announced his squad which included Branko Boskovic, the Rapid Vienna midfielder gets injured during training and is now out for five weeks, thus immediately disqualifying him from our World Cup qualifiers. We never seem to be able to have a full strength squad :wallbang:

This is a big blow, but we have been playing without Branko for the last two years, so maybe his exclusion won't affect us too much. The only positive news for us that came out today is that one of England's key defenders, Everton's Phil Jagielka has also been disqualified for this month's qualifiers due to injury.

Bošković pauzira pet sedmica, preskače Moldaviju i Englesku!

Kakav peh!

Englezi oslabljeni protiv Crne Gore

England's official fan club sent out a "Guide to Montenegro" to all of it's traveling members and i thought one part of it was particularly funny.

She added that fans can expect a warm welcome before saying that the locals are: “The most hospitable people in the world, in fact if you say you love their country 'Crna Gora' they will want to hug you.” ...Really? Montenegrins are the most hospitable people in the world? That sounds like a little bit of an exaggeration :D

They also gave recognition to our prosciutto, our great red wine, Vranac and also to one of the best beers in the Balkans, Nikšićko Pivo :shades:

A guide to Montenegro

London England fans met in Piccadilly Circus last Thursday for a fans travel forum ahead of the trip to Montenegro.

A packed room heard reports from Jamie Craig, englandfans Membership Manager, who had just returned from Podgorica, and Annalisa Rellie, author of the Bradt Travel Guide to Montenegro.

Having just completed a recent recce to the country, Jamie allayed any fears that the fans had about travelling to eastern Europe. Jamie described meetings with Montenegrin police, FA, stadium management and hotel owners as amicable. The game has been classed as 'low risk' although following the pitch invasion the last time we played there, although mainly friendly, a FIFA delegate may attend to observe the match.

Jamie also explained that it was having played in Podgorica so recently that has made organising this trip so smooth, the Montenegrin authorities have a very positive view of England fans from the last time. Jamie also outlined the various preparations being made for the team's trip.

Annalisa was up next and she presented a slideshow showing the cultural side of Montenegro that fans could expect to see. She said: “I always tell people it’s an operatic country, its larger than life.” She added that fans can expect a warm welcome before saying that the locals are: “The most hospitable people in the world, in fact if you say you love their country 'Crna Gora' they will want to hug you.”

For England fans over on a two or more days visit and wanting to see some of the culture, Analisa recommended to go to Cetinje and see all the old palaces.

Annalisa also provided eating and drinking advice. She said: “The best thing of all to eat is the dried ham called Prsuit, and a nice cheese which is a sort of semi soft cheese that is made up in the mountains.” She also recommend Vranac, a deep red wine and Cristac, which is white wine Sauvignon Blanc. She also suggested trying a beer called Niksic.

A very big boost for us concerning the England game. Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been ruled out for three weeks due to an ankle injury and therefore misses the match in Podgorica. In my opinion, Wilshere is England's most talented player and was the main reason why England beat Brazil last month in their friendly at Wembley.

With the absences of Jagielka and now Wilshere, I think it more than makes up for Boskovic's exclusion. Fingers crossed the rest of our players come away unscathed after this weekend's action for their clubs.

Jack Wilshere to miss Arsenal and England games with ankle injury

• Wishere to miss games against Bayern Munich and Swansea
• Also out of San Marino and Montenegro World Cup qualifiers

The Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has confirmed that Jack Wilshere will be unable to play for three weeks with an inflamed ankle. He will miss Arsenal's Champions League second leg with Bayern Munich on Wednesday and England's forthcoming World Cup qualifying double-header against San Marino and Montenegro.

Wenger explained: "Jack Wilshere is out. He has an inflamed ankle, the other ankle to [the] one he injured. He will be out for three weeks and will not be available for Munich, Swansea and not for England.

"Hopefully for the Premier League he will miss only one game. After is an international break. We can slowly prepare him."

Wenger added that Wilshere had been working hard and that a break could also be helpful on a preventative level. "I could see in the last couple of games he had started to dig deep," he said. "He has played 30 games. For us it is not welcome but maybe for him it is not bad that he has a little breather.

"It is more about prevention. The specialist decided he needed it. He has some bone bruising. The last time it deteriorated into a stress fracture. That's what we don't want to happen.

"We trust people who are specialists in this area. He was out for 17 months and we had to deal with it; we must be able to deal with it for two or three games."

Wenger also confirmed that both Kieran Gibbs and Abou Diaby will be in the Arsenal squad that face Bayern Munich. "Kieran Gibbs is back in the squad. [Bacary] Sagna is not available. Diaby is in the squad and will have a test this morning," he said.

Well it seems like i may have spoken too soon. Yet one more midfielder will be out for our qualifiers and it is Nikola Drincic. Nikola suffered this injury more than a month ago, but it was thought he would recover in time for the qualifiers, but obviously this is not the case. I'm assuming now that the starting central midfielders for both games will be Zverotic and Pekovic.

Speaking of England, head coach Roy Hodgson announced his squad today and the only real surprise was the inclusion of 34 year old defender Rio Ferdinand who has been called up due to the injury to Phil Jagielka.

In other news, we climbed up one more spot in the Fifa Rankings, now sitting in 28th place.

Orsato u Moldaviji, Erikson u Podgorici

Ferdinand recalled to England squad

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has been recalled to the England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro.

England manager Roy Hodgson has previously overlooked Ferdinand, 34, for what he infamously described as "football reasons", but has named the defender in his latest squad ahead of the forthcoming qualifiers.

The United centre-back has not represented his nation since June 2011, when he earned his 81st cap against Switzerland, although he has made it clear he is available for selection.

Hodgson gave a strong hint that Ferdinand could have a prominent role to play in the double-header coming up, and possibly beyond.

He said at his press conference: "A player of Rio's calibre and also of Rio's age, you don't bring them into a squad as back-ups, you bring them into the squad or the team because you want them to make the team better, to give you a better chance of winning.

"So it wouldn't take too much guesswork to work out that he's in the squad in order to play rather than to make up the numbers.

"Like all players you select, you select them because you think they're capable of doing the job you want them to do. But who knows what the future holds? 2014 is still a long way off and if Rio is still going the way he is at the moment, in 2014 he is going to be a major candidate for the squad.

"He has been playing well and his team have been playing extremely well. I think this is the moment to select him because he certainly deserves it on current form."

Ferdinand is among Hodgson's 26-man squad for when the Three Lions face San Marino and Montenegro in their World Cup qualifiers on March 22 and 26 respectively.

Scott Parker and Michael Dawson have also been called upon, the former having returned to full fitness following an Achilles problem while his Tottenham team-mate has impressed in the heart of Spurs' defence.

West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster is back among the international fold following impressive form for his club, having not played for England since November 2010.

England are currently second in Group H after four games, having won two and drawn as many of their qualifiers so far, with Montenegro top of the standings by two points.

Roy Hodgson's press conference from today.

GeXCPL8pCG4

Plus, England assistant coach Gary Neville says that they will be aiming for three points in Podgorica, which of course is easier said than done.

England will not settle for draw against Montenegro insists Gary Neville

Sides meet in World Cup qualifier later this month

Gary Neville insists England will not adopt the Italian mentality of grinding out a draw when they head to Montenegro later this month.

Manager Roy Hodgson is due to unveil his squad tomorrow for a World Cup double-header with San Marino and Montenegro, which will do so much to shape England's hopes of reaching Brazil.

The major focus will be on whether Rio Ferdinand gets a recall given Phil Jagielka has been ruled out with an ankle injury, Joleon Lescott has started just one game of the last four for Manchester City, Chris Smalling was reduced to Under-21 duty at Manchester United on Monday and Gary Cahill has been struggling for form at Chelsea.

It would represent a major climbdown for Hodgson to select Ferdinand, having continually given the impression he wanted to "move on" from the 34-year-old.

Nevertheless, the obvious alternatives, Tottenham duo Michael Dawson and Steven Caulker, lack Ferdinand's experience, which could be vital in Podgorica against a dangerous Montenegro outfit that represent the greatest danger to England's hopes of automatic qualification.

Although they presently trail Montenegro in Group H, a draw would represent a positive return given the fixtures which remain.

But speaking on his return to old club Bury Juniors FC as part of the FA Community Awards 2013 presented by McDonald's, nominations for which can now be made at http://www.mcdonalds.co.uk/kickstart, Neville ruled that attitude out.

"I have never looked at any game, either for Manchester United or England, and said I will play for a draw - and I never will," said Neville, who was appointed as Hodgson's assistant prior to Euro 2012.

"That is not the English mentality. We are not Italians, who can grind things out and be cagey for an entire game.

"We want to be on the front foot. Our mentality must always be to try and win."

If Hodgson's reasoning behind whatever decision he makes with Ferdinand will be first on the agenda when he faces the media tomorrow following the squad announcement, Wayne Rooney's name will not be far behind.

Left out of Sir Alex Ferguson's starting line-up for Manchester United's Champions League defeat by Real Madrid last week, the 27-year-old was recalled for the FA Cup draw with Chelsea, when he also scored his 15th goal of the season.

In between, Ferguson was vehement in his claim that Rooney would not be leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season.

And Neville does not believe he will either.

"Manchester United is the most incredible football club. There is always a fall-out when something goes wrong," he said.

"It is never just normal when they go out of Europe. There is always something big.

"It is only when you are on the outside you see how big the club is and the exaggeration that surrounds it.

"Wayne Rooney gets left out of one match and all of a sudden he is out of the club and people are pointing back to all sorts of historic occasions.

"I take the manager at his word. Why would Wayne Rooney want to leave? He is a big player for everybody and both of them seem to fit each other."

Scrutiny would have been on Rooney anyway given it was in the Euro 2012 qualifier in Montenegro that he got himself needlessly sent off, eventually causing him to miss the first two matches of the finals, which many felt contributed to another below-par performance at a major tournament.

The stakes are not quite as high this time, although should England get beaten they will be five points behind and realistically condemned to searching for a route to Brazil via the play-offs.

Neville accepts getting any kind of result will not be easy but, from personal experience, he knows the best way of trying to get it.

"I have watched a lot of Montenegro's games in the last couple of months and it will be a hostile atmosphere, as it always is in eastern Europe," said Neville.

"It never changes. They are really passionate about their countries. You are talking about countries who have had hostilities around there for 20-odd years. You can feel the passion. There is a fighting spirit amongst them.

"It will be the same in Montenegro.

"You have to handle the atmosphere in any away ground. It is the first thing you say; let's kill the crowd. Keep the ball and get a goal."

Well according to Manchester United head coach Alex Ferguson, there is a good chance that Rio Ferdinand won't be apart of the England squad after all due to concern over his fitness.

Rio Ferdinand may not link up with England, says Sir Alex Ferguson

• Manchester United defender was selected by Roy Hodgson
• 'We have to look at things before Rio decides if he joins up'

Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that Rio Ferdinand may not join up with England next week.

Ferdinand was selected by Roy Hodgson on Thursday for this month's World Cup qualifiers with San Marino and Montenegro, the first time he has been called up by the England manager since he took charge just before Euro 2012.

The move caught Ferguson by surprise given Ferdinand's long-standing fitness issues and he is not entirely convinced international duty is the best way forward for the 34-year-old.

"I was as surprised as anyone when I heard," Ferguson said. "I need to speak to the [United] doctor because we prepare Rio Ferdinand in a certain way and there are certain treatments he has to go through.

"He has to make sure he is going to be OK in terms of the number of games he plays. We have been doing that for two years and it has worked. We have to look at all these things before Rio decides [if he joins up]."

If Ferdinand did not report it would be a minor embarrassment for Hodgson given his climbdown from previous statements that he has "moved on" from the Manchester United defender.

"The procedures have been the same all season which has given him fantastic performance levels when he's playing for us," said Ferguson. "We have to consider that and Rio is considering that. And we'll see what the outcome of that is."

Meanwhile, Ferguson has rejected Rafael Benítez's accusations that he refused to shake hands with the Chelsea manager ahead of last Sunday's 2-2 FA Cup draw at Old Trafford. "It is nonsense," said the Scot. "Why would I refuse to shake his hand?

"I was signing autographs and I never saw him. Why he has said that I have no idea. If he wanted to shake hands he could have stood straight in front of me. It is absolute nonsense."

Ferguson also confirmed neither Nani nor Phil Jones will be available for Saturday's Premier League encounter with Reading at Old Trafford, although in the winger's case, his hamstring injury is not as bad as first feared.

"When he came off against Chelsea last week we thought it could have been another bad hamstring injury," said Ferguson. "It is not as serious as we thought but he could be out for a couple of weeks."

Meanwhile Brnovic was interviewed by CGSPORT.ME and despite the losses of Drincic and Boskovic, Brna still believes in getting 6 points from the two games.

According to Roy Hodgson, Wayne Rooney plans to make amends for that idiotic display of his last time around in Podgorica. Rooney is yet to score a goal against us and let's hope it stays that way.

Wayne Rooney seeks redemption for England in Montenegro after red card

• United striker was sent off in Euro 2012 qualifier
• Roy Hodgson says he is not concerned about a repeat

Wayne Rooney will be thrust back into the eye of the storm when England play Montenegro a week on Tuesday, one and a half years after he was sent off in Podgorica for an unprovoked, wild and aggressive swipe at Miodrag Dzudovic. Roy Hodgson claims he has no concerns about the striker's temperament ahead of another important World Cup qualifier, but experience shows that, in the heat of battle, Rooney can, and often does, rise to the bait.

Rooney paid for his petulance with a suspension that ruled him out of two matches at Euro 2012 and, despite a goal against Ukraine in Donetsk, he was a shadow of the player who scored 35 times for Manchester United that season. The contrast in Rooney's club and international form since 2004 has been stark, to say the least, but redemption in the former Yugoslav state next week would go some way to easing a turbulent period that has included an omission from the United side for their biggest game of the campaign and speculation linking him with a move away from Old Trafford.

That red card during England's 2-2 draw in October 2011 followed the arrest of Rooney's father in a probe into alleged betting irregularities, for which he was eventually cleared. With hindsight, Rooney was in no fit mental state to face such a fierce and hostile atmosphere, Yet despite the bitter blow of being left on the bench against Real Madrid in United's recent Champions League tie, Hodgson – who insisted "that's got nothing to do with me" – is unconcerned that history may repeat itself.

"Wayne made a mistake, held his hand up and publicly admitted it was a mistake. He paid a high price for it because he missed two of the opening games in the European Championship," said the England manager.

"He won't need me to tell him or remind him – it will be fresh in his memory, but all I can repeat is that his disciplinary record with us is very good and he certainly hasn't let me down when he's played so I've got no reason to doubt him.

"I think it will be intimidating, a lot of those former Yugoslav countries are very passionate. They have fantastic support and they let you know that you are the away team. But you've got to learn to deal with those things if we are ever going to do anything worthwhile at international level, we've got to be capable of playing in atmospheres which are not in our favour.

"I have no reason to think there will be problems there, the only thing you can accuse the Montenegrins of is fervently supporting their team, but that isn't a crime. We'll talk about it, we'll be ready for it and it will be part of our preparations to make certain that, mentally, we've got some idea of what we're going into."

England trail Montenegro by two points in Group H but must first travel to San Marino on Friday before the game in Podgorica, while Montenegro play Moldova. All the focus will be on Rio Ferdinand's return to international action but the home supporters will not have forgotten Rooney's reckless kick at Dzudovic. It came when England were winning and put them under intense pressure for the remaining 20 minutes of the match, eventually leading to an equaliser in injury time.

A point was enough to secure qualification for last year's European Championship, but it cannot be denied that Rooney's red mist put England's chances of advancing to Poland and Ukraine in serious jeopardy and Montenegro's players, as well as the crowd, will certainly now try to provoke him at every opportunity.

"He doesn't seem to me to have been affected in any game we've played by opponents," said Hodgson. "They are the type of things that players need to come to terms with and be prepared for. All the players will be made aware that we're playing away from home and we're playing against a very important rival for the top spot. They'll have to be ready to play the game tactically, technically and mentally. From the side I don't know if you see it that much. If it is happening you probably need to be on the field of play to be aware of it, because it's not something people shout over loudspeakers."

Hodgson insisted the Montenegro game would not be "decisive", with so many matches remaining. England still have to play Ukraine in Kiev, while Montenegro and Poland are yet to come to Wembley.

"We've said all along that it's not an easy group, it's a group with good quality international teams, but I'm fortunate because I also think I'm managing a good quality international team, so it's up to us to get out on the field of play and show that," he added.

Rooney said last October: "I won't be looking for revenge against Montenegro, definitely not." Perhaps not, but with 11 players and a whole stadium preparing to taunt him with insults, jibes and petty fouls, he had better mean it.

First training session took place today. In attendance was Dzudovic, Vukcevic, Jovanovic, Krkotic, Igumanovic, M.Bozovic, Novakovic and Beciraj.

Jovanovic and Krkotic spoke about our opponents on Friday, Moldova.

Milan Jovanović: Odgovornom igrom do pobjede protiv Moldavije

Selektor Brnović na prvom treningu imaće osam igrača – Miodrag Džudović, Simon Vukčević, Milana Jovanovića, Miloša Krkotića, Blažo Igumanovića, Mladen Božović, Mitar Novaković i Fatos Bećiraj.

Some more good news, England have been hit with more injuries. Tottenham duo Michael Dawson and Aaron Lennon have been ruled out, while Chelsea's Gary Cahill is a doubt as well. More importantly though, Rio Ferdiand has pulled out of the squad and as a result Joleon Lescott and Steven Caulker have been called up as replacements.

Rio Ferdinand withdraws from England squad for World Cup qualifiers

• Roy Hodgson: 'I'm disappointed Rio will not be available'
• Defender wants to play for England in future

Rio Ferdinand has pulled out of the England squad following a meeting with Roy Hodgson on Sunday evening, with the 34-year-old citing the lack of notice he was given to adjust his fitness programme.

The internationals against San Marino and Montenegro were supposed to be Ferdinand's first games for England under Hodgson and his first for the national team since June 2011. The manager did not rule out selecting him in the future.

Hodgson said: "I'm disappointed Rio will not be available, but due to the detailed pre-planned training and medical programme he must follow it's not possible. However, I was pleased that Rio called and asked to meet with me. It was important to hear from him personally about the way he must manage his body between games.

"This is not to say he cannot play back-to-back games - he can and has proven so. He's out this time due to particular pre-planned details already in place for his programme. I must place on record how I was impressed with his commitment to playing for England and I look forward to hopefully selecting him for squads in the future." Ferdinand said: "It was important for me to be able to speak with Roy face to face and explain the situation, and one thing I made clear was that my passion and commitment to represent my country is as strong as ever. It is disappointing that I won't be able to play a part in the upcoming games but I told Roy that I want to continue to be available for England and I look forward to working with him in the future."

A Football Association statement said: "Rio Ferdinand has been forced to withdraw from England's forthcoming fixtures with San Marino and Montenegro. The decision was taken following a meeting in London on Sunday evening with Rio Ferdinand and England Manager Roy Hodgson. At the meeting, Rio confirmed he wants to continue playing for England and to be selected for the summer and autumn fixtures."

Steven Caulker replaces Ferdinand for the World Cup qualifiers for San Marino and Montenegro.

Aaron Lennon and Michael Dawson set to miss England World Cup qualifiers

England dealt double injury blow ahead of matches against San Marino and Montenegro

The Tottenham manager, André Villas-Boas, said Aaron Lennon would not be fit for England's World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro while Michael Dawson would most likely be unable to play as well, although the Spurs players will report for fitness assessments with the national team doctors.

England play against San Marino on Friday, four days before their trip to Montenegro.

Dawson, whose call-up was the most recent high point of a season that had started with him on the transfer list at Tottenham, was forced off at half time in Sunday's 0-1 home defeat to Fulham after he felt his hamstring tighten. Lennon was not in the match-day squad because of his ongoing struggle with groin and hamstring problems.

"Michael felt his muscle going in the first half," said Villas-Boas, "and if we had brought him on in the second half, we would be risking a major injury. I think Michael will be assessed by the England team doctors … they will be in communication with our medical department to find out if he will make it or not but he probably won't.

"We were much more sensible with Aaron [against Fulham] … and he won't be able to make it [for England]. He has been struggling a lot with injuries. We risked him the other night as a substitute against Inter Milan in the Europa League and he is on the brink of rupturing his muscle so we decided to take him out of this game."

Bivši Sovjeti leže Crnoj Gori: Čak sedam pobjeda i remi

Gary Cahill has been ruled out of England's qualifier against San Marino and looks very doubtful to be going against us as well. Hodgson has now called up Newcastle's Steven Taylor as his replacement.

Gary Cahill out of England's San Marino trip and may miss Montenegro

• Chelsea man is latest defender to succumb to injury
• Newcastle's uncapped Steven Taylor called up

Gary Cahill has been ruled out of England's World Cup qualifier with San Marino on Friday. The Chelsea defender hurt his knee in Sunday's 2-0 home win against West Ham United and will not play in the first of the two away games. He will be reassessed ahead of Tuesday's match in Montenegro.

The uncapped Newcastle United centre-half Steven Taylor has been called up following some impressive recent performances in the Premier League.

Cahill's absence adds to Roy Hodgson's defensive woes. Spurs' Michael Dawson pulled out of contention for both matches on Sunday, to be replaced by Joleon Lescott, while Rio Ferdinand did likewise on Monday as he continues to follow an intricate fitness programme. Steven Caulker was Ferdinand's replacement.

While Hodgson's defensive formation for Friday's encounter with San Marino may not be a concern, next week's game with Montenegro in Podgorica certainly will be. Unless Cahill's knee injury eases sufficiently for him to be made available, England face the uncomfortable scenario of selecting between players who have next to no international experience – Taylor and Caulker have one cap between them – and Joleon Lescott, who is out of favour at Manchester City.

It puts into stark perspective Ferdinand's decision to snub an international recall on fitness grounds and underlines why Hodgson was so keen to have him back in the fold.

England trail Montenegro by two points in Group H, although they have a succession of home games next season meaning a draw next week would not be a disaster.

Defeat most certainly would be, though, and while it is a rather unpalatable thought there could be a chance Hodgson will consider using Michael Carrick in defence given he has occupied the role for Manchester United in past emergencies.

Zajedno mogu puno

Dejan Damjanovic with some comments of his own the the upcoming qualifiers.

Plus an article from an English perspective on next Tuesday's game in Podgorica.

Hodgson's headaches: Back problems, a muddle in the middle and a lack of forward thinking - Sportsmail analyses how Roy can resolve issues and find a winning position

Roy Hodgson is facing the biggest challenge of his short reign as England manager as he prepares for the World Cup qualifier against San Marino on Friday and the key clash against Montenegro the following Tuesday.

It is crunch time for Hodgson. His side are two points behind Group H leaders Montenegro with six games to play.

After Monday’s dramatic withdrawal of Rio Ferdinand from the squad, the loss of Jack Wilshere to injury and concerns over Wayne Rooney’s form, the England manager has plenty of issues to resolve.

Time to shine: Roy Hodgson (centre) faces the biggest test of his short reign as England manager

DEFENCE

In Stevan Jovetic and Mirko Vucinic, Group H leaders Montenegro boast two of the leading strikers in European football.

Jovetic, with 12 goals in 21 Serie A appearances for Fiorentina this season, is a handful for club and country.Vucinic, who plays for Champions League quarter-finalists Juventus, is also Montenegro’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Hodgson wanted to use the experience and class of Ferdinand to combat that pairing in Podgorica.

But the manager is now forced to consider alternatives who are either short of international experience or first-team club football.

Threat: Juventus forward Mirko Vucinic is likely to lead the line for Montenegro

Class act: Stevan Jovetic has dazzled for Fiorentina this season

Hodgson started the prestige friendly against Brazil last month with the central defensive pairing of Gary Cahill and Chris Smalling.

The fact that it worked, with England winning 2-1 in front of a full house at Wembley, is of some comfort but Hodgson wanted more experience for the game against Montenegro.

Cahill’s form has been poor of late, notably in the FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester United at Old Trafford, when he appeared nervous and fragile.

Central figure: Gary Cahill is likely to start for England in their crunch World Cup qualifiers

He also took a knock on his ankle during Chelsea’s win against West Ham on Sunday and the plan was to have a scan once he joined the England squad last night.

Despite his form, the Chelsea man is now his country’s first-choice central defender but there is still the question of who plays alongside him.

Smalling has been out of the United team recently, although he did start the 1-0 victory over Reading last Saturday at right back.

Goalden start: Steven Caulker scored on his England debut against Sweden

Phil Jagielka is still sidelined through injury and Michael Dawson pulled out of the squad on Sunday evening.

Joleon Lescott, substitute for Manchester City’s 2-0 defeat at Everton on Saturday lunchtime, is the alternative.

Steven Caulker, given the runaround by Zlatan Ibrahimovic in England’s 4-2 defeat against Sweden in Stockholm in November, was promoted from the Under 21 squad yesterday in place of Ferdinand.

MIDFIELD

In the absence of Wilshere, who will miss both World Cup qualifiers with an ankle injury, there is only one guaranteed starter in England’s midfield. As captain, Steven Gerrard is an automatic pick.

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, who started last month’s friendly against Brazil, has probably done enough to keep his place even if there could be competition from Scott Parker.

Guaranteed: Steven Gerrard is set to start for England as captain

Cleverley was on the bench for United’s 1-1 draw at Real Madrid but started the 2-1 defeat in the return leg. If Cleverley is in, Hodgson will need one more midfielder, so step forward Frank Lampard. He scored his 200th goal for Chelsea against former side West Ham on Sunday and also hit the winner against Brazil last month.

Lampard came off the bench to win that game for Hodgson and his goalscoring record — 27 in 94 England appearances — should be enough to see him selected.

There are also cases to be made for Michael Carrick and Leon Osman, however. Both have enjoyed exceptional seasons. Carrick’s range of passing can add a touch to the team but Osman is also in good nick after scoring a terrific goal against Manchester City at the weekend.

Winner: Frank Lampard curls home England's second against Brazil and celebrates (below)

ATTACK

Wayne Rooney’s last visit to Podgorica, in September 2011, ended with a red card and a two-match ban, which kicked in at the start of Euro 2012.

He was sent off for lashing out at Miodrag Dzudovic and the Montenegro defender has been picked for this vital qualifier.

That dismissal came on Fabio Capello’s watch but Hodgson was left to pick up the pieces. Last week the manager insisted he did not need to speak with Rooney about his temperament or his return to Podgorica. ‘These sort of things tend to live with players and I don’t need to remind him about it,’ said Hodgson.

Bad omen? Wayne Rooney was sent off for kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic during his previous visit to Podgorica

Although Rooney tweeted on Monday that he has been looking forward to two important fixtures for England, he has experienced a traumatic few weeks.

After playing out of position in the Champions League tie against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu, he was dropped to the bench for the return leg at Old Trafford.

He was restored to the starting line-up against Chelsea in the FA Cup and responded with United’s second goal. He was also on target against Reading on Saturday in the 1-0 win.

Accommodated: Theo Walcott could deputise on the right in Roy Hodgson's system

Last month, Rooney scored the opening goal against Brazil and he will be expected to continue this run of decent form.

‘People always talk about a lack of everything with England,’ said national coach Gary Neville. ‘The reality is there are good forwards, with the likes of Sturridge, Welbeck, Rooney, Defoe, Carroll — there are lots.

‘You could argue that when you look around the teams in the world, quite a lot of them would like to pinch one or two of those players.’

Favourite: Danny Welbeck scored against Sweden

Hodgson’s system will also accommodate Theo Walcott on the right, although his form has tailed off in recent weeks.

Danny Welbeck is still feeling the after-glow of that powerful, well-directed header against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu and he is a personal favourite of Hodgson’s.

The manager could certainly use one of his strikers showing top form in these crucial games.
