Hakan Yakin in Liverpool?
We need some topics to discuss to overcome this boring winter break... ;)
Maybe we can discuss some rumors in the meantime. The Swiss press has written that Hakan Yakin was traveling to Liverpool this week to talk about a contract for the next season. Yakin has a special clause in his current contract with Basel that says he can leave the club after the end of a season for a fixed tranfer fee of 1 mio Euro. Of course this fee is a joke for every club in one of the great football leagues, so they cant really do anything wrong signing him. Today I've heard that he actually hasn't traveled to Liverpool cause the management there isnt sure if he would really be a reinforcement for the team. I'm not sure myself either. Like his brother Murat, Hakan is a person who needs an "optimal surrounding" for his best performance. you've seen what happened to Murat in Germany and Turkey, he was far away from his best cause he just didnt feel well there. I so,ehow think the same could happen to Hakan... Hakan is known to be a "lazy" player who deosnt like to train and needs a very tolerant trainer because of that. I dont think Houllier would accept that of a "little swiss guy". Here in Basel he's the star and can (more or less) do as he pleases, that will definitely not be the case in a team like Liverpool. Well, we will see what happens. I think the english football could be well suited for him cause his surprising passes are excellent to overcome the typical athletic english defences. But it's not only his football skill that will decide if he'll be succesful or not... |
G'day Athelas and co
I actually think there could be quite a bit to talk about during the break, especially considering Basel and their good performances in europe which will no doubt have clubs and agents circling like Vultures :( :sigh: :groan: Anyway i think Liverpool would be a bad move for a player like Hakan. Having seen Liverpool live means that you probably have a better perspective than me but from what i've seen of them, Houllier is a coach who doesn't really favour creativity and his treatment of Jari Litmanen should be enough of a sign to stop a player like Hakan Yakin signing for them He would do well in the EPL i think provided that he goes to a team that uses him properly. I am pretty sure his best position is in "the hole" behind the striker(s) and for this reason he might be better suited to Italy or Spain where the teams play with a "playmaker" who plays either behind a central striker (in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 formation ) or two strikers (in the 4-3-1-2 system that Basel favours) Having said that, English football is changing and becoming more technical ever day without losing the speed of the game that it was built on and even less fancied teams like Middlesbrough and Everton are getting results playing attractive and technical football so he'd do fine there as well IMO :) |
Hakan Yakin should be smart enough to realise that Everton is the best option. David Moyes surely wants to take Everton into a more technical direction, so Yakin might be the player we need if he wants to move to England.

From what I've seen of Hakin Yakin in the Champs League and all, he looks an excellent little player, and playing against Liverpool and Man Utd he has done very well, and if he is playing well against them teams, he could be amazing against all the other teams.
I'd love to see him at Boro, perhaps on loan first, but somehow I cant see it happening, as we have a good few players who can play in the hole, but I'd love to see him in a Boro shirt ... |
If he signed for Everton now he could well win us the title :D

Celtic interested in Basle's Yakin Celtic have expressed interest in Basle playmaker Hakan Yakin. O'Neill: Yakin interest (CliveMason/GettyImages) The 25-year-old was part of the Swiss side which denied the Parkhead club a place in the lucrative Champions League group stages in August. But his performances in those games and then against Liverpool and Manchester United have persuaded Hoops manager Martin O'Neill to make enquiries. Yakin is rated at ?million, although a clause in his contract would allow him to leave Basle for half that price in the summer. Former Celtic star Tosh McKinlay, who is working as a consultant for Yakin, insists the player will be on the move before the transfer window closes at the end of the month. McKinlay said: `Celtic are interested in Yakin but there has been no official move for him. `I've been talking to the general manager at Basle and there are a couple of clubs sniffing around but no concrete bids as yet. `I'm working with Yakin's brother and agent, Ertan, on this and I'm pretty sure he won't be at Basle at the end of this month. `There were a couple of Premiership clubs interested but it was only tentative. `There has been nothing concrete from anyone yet.' soccernet :D |
I dont think Hakan will leave before the end of the season cause this clause in his contract (leaving for 1.5m swiss francs) is only valid at the end of every season. If he would leave now he woud be much more expensive.

Well i have heard about these Celtic rumours and i hope he doesn't go there as i think he can go better than playing for a team no better than Basel IMO in a league that is just as (if not more) uncompetitive.
However it doesn't surprise me that Celtic are interested as they have been looking for that type of player ever since Moravcik retired |
The Swiss League is likely more competitive than the Scottish one, and Swiss football is in a better state generally. Swiss clubs are more than capable of attracting international talent, but nowadays they have to compete with a whole host of other clubs.
I've heard the Celtic rumours too, but surely a club like Everton (if we can actually pay for him) would be a far more attractive proposition especially as we will have a style which suits him and we'll surely be playing in Europe next season ;) |
Liverpool Linked With Hakan Yakin
Latest News | Latest Transfer News | News Archive Yakin has been one of the stars of the World Cup (Getty Images) 01/07/2003. Liverpool have joined Celtic in being linked with Basle midfielder Hakan Yakin, who was instrumental in knocking both the British sides out of this seasons Champions League. The 25-year-old Swiss international has a clause in his contract that makes him available for what is by current standards a tiny fee, but according to the player it is more likely a move will take place in the summer. Yakin told the Daily Record: "I will not be leaving Basle this winter but I will make a decision on my future before our next Champions League match against Deportivo La Coruna on February 19. "I have heard about the interest from Celtic and at the moment everything is interesting for me. Why not Celtic? "But there are other offers, including interest from Liverpool, and I will make a final decision at the beginning of February." soccerage  |
