ARJEN ROBBEN = Johan Cruijff

Two days before the Spurs - Chelsea London derby, Martin Jol said in his latest press conference that he believes Arjen Robben to be the best footballer we've had since Johan Cruijff.

As we all know, he's definitely been the best left winger in the EPL if not in Europe this season (only Stuart Downing could have a shout in the EPL) despite being injured since Euro 2004 and in Euro 2004 he caused havoc against the Czechs in euro 2004 despite only reaching full fitness a week prior to the tournament as he was injured for at least 3 months after that slip against Auxerre.
The way he made Fulhams defenders lie on their asses was :star: :lick:

We've had players like Van Basten, Gullit and Bergkamp to name but a few but do you really think Robben has everything in his package to be remembered as a legend when we'll be talking to our grandchildren just like Johan is :proud: or is Martin Jol jumping on the gun and getting a bit too enthousiastic? if there's a man who knows his stuff, Jol would be it as he's seen Robben from close hands since he was 16.

No matter what, Jol again showed today what a modest man he was when he got the manager of the month award for December by immediately declaring the award was for the club rather than for him. Just think what Co would have said , had he got an award :o :D

:proud:

Jol's quotes about players haven't been his best part, just remember him saying that Peter vd Berg was the best defender in the Netherlands.

It's way to soon anyway to judge Robben in an all-time field. He has only just started his carreer. Only perhaps Jol sees the danger already with Paramot against Robben and the fact that his non-losing streak could be broken this weekend. So by praising Arjen so much he will make it less shamefull.

Well maybe he's got a point. The player looks promising. Cruyff - Van Basten - Robben

could be :)

Thats not right, Robben great player but not comparable to Cruyff or Van Basten in any way. Jol is just silly when he said that, I like Robben alot:thmbup:

I think Robben is a very talented player, but the Dutch media is overhyped about him. Especially people like Johan Derksen and Peter Wekking, columnists of Voetbal International, are going too far with the superlatives.

It didn't suprise me for example that Robben wasn't in the team of best players of 2004. He had to compete with Nedved, and I believe the Czech is still two classes above Robben at the moment.

I think Cruijff was unique - and no player is like the other. Everyone has his strength and weak points. Robben is surely on a very good way , but itīs not right to compare him with Johan. Not yet!
And didnīt the so called "expert" also talk like this about van der Vaart? ;) :D

All of the (ex) Ajax bobo's called VDV the next Cruijff, only I, Drulo :D, dared to say that Van Persie is already (and will be even more so as time passes) a much bigger and better player, not comparing him to anyone BTW.

As for Robben, don't hype him! He's brilliant and I'm sure we all realise that, but I hate how nowadays people blow these youngsters up to extreme hights putting even more unneccessary pressure on them. Robben is already one of the world's best wingers and instead of labeling him, let's just enjoy his career!

Cruijff was and still is a big personality.
Robben is definitely not, but boy... he can play football!!

I personally reckon that Robben is a type of player that I havent seen lately. Not sure if he has the style of Cruijff but the way he manages to go through the opponent's defence reminds me of Stoichkov...but then he himself learned a lot from Cruijff. Im really admiring how many talents has come out of Holland lately. ***** Brazil! Your country rocks big time!

Robben ain't no Cruyff and might never will be. Both are a separate entity. But Robben sure knows a thing or two about football.

...different roles, Cryuff was one of a kind as the General for the orange, Robben, I wtach him few times lately, looks great and can be an excellent forward, has everything till now to be great, but at the end, luck with injures, and menthal strength will declare his status in history, Johan is there beside Pele, Di Stefano, and Maradona...

stefan_jonas February 14th, 2005 03:26

If my memory serves me correctly, Cruyff had a stronger left boot, therefore making him much more comparable to van der Vaart :) Anyway I don't believe Robben will become as great as Cruyff is, simply because he isn't as much of a leader and is slightly more conservative. He's damn good though. I see VDV as the next Cruyff in 3-4 years time.
