Bilic has said that during the qualifiers he will call up some of the U19 players and drop the "older" players who aren't performing well for their clubs (this probably means Cale, Vucko)

Croatia geared up for Group 5 task

Croatia's hopes of qualifying for the 2005/06 UEFA European Under-19 Championship for the first time have suffered a significant setback as they prepare to welcome Israel, Portugal and F.Y.R. Macedonia in Elite round Group 5.

Tadic ruled out
Ivica Grnja's side reached this stage for the third successive season after remaining unbeaten against Bulgaria, Iceland and Bosnia-Herzegovina to win Group 11 in the qualifying round. One of Croatia's best players, Bayer 04 Leverkusen forward Josip Tadic – already an U21 international – will miss his side's bid to reach this summer's final tournament in Poland having broken his collarbone. "It's a really big blow for our team, he was our key player and now we must go for a younger replacement," said Grnja.

Grnja apprehension
Grnja, whose side won two of a three-match series against Hungary in February before playing Slovenia in March, losing 1-0 on home soil and winning the reverse fixture by the same scoreline. Despite that, the Croatia coach believes his side are outsiders, saying: "Portugal are definitely the favourites but Israel also have a solid team and F.Y.R. Macedonia recently defeated Bulgaria 3-0 so that should be a warning for us. Our key players should be midfielder Anas Sharbini and forward Nikola Kalinic, although both are in the senior squads at their clubs so might be lacking in match practice."

Dinis confidence
For his part, Portugal coach Carlos Dinis has based his squad around FC Porto and Sporting Clube de Portugal players, with the former providing seven members and the latter six. Portugal prepared for the mini-tournament in Croatia with victory in the XXIV Porto International Tournament in April, defeating China (5-1), Norway (4-1) and Canada (1-0) with midfielder Bruno Gama and goalkeeper Igor Araújo both catching the eye. "This tournament was important for our growth as a team," said Dinis. "We are even more confident and improved both in defence and attack. We are very positive about the future."

Israeli perfection
Israel reached the Elite round with a 100 per cent record, defeating Cyprus, Malta and Norway to claim first place in Group 4 with Maccabi Haifa FC starlet Maor Bar Buzaglo leading the way. Although a number of the squad have since been required to participate in national service, Israel have at least recorded 1-0 victories against Serbia and Montenegro and Northern Ireland in 2006, although another match with the Northern Irish ended in a 2-1 defeat while Slovakia earned two 1-0 wins in February. However, the side received a welcome boost with the news that Hapoel Petach-Tikva FC's Nigerian-born striker Toto Adurans Tamuz Temile, who scored eleven goals in 23 league appearances this season, has been granted permission to represent Israel.

Macedonian nerve
F.Y.R. Macedonia, meanwhile, squeezed into the second round having finished as runners-up in Group 9 after a three-way tie with Turkey and Romania on five points. Ilco Gjorgjioski's team last reached this stage two seasons ago and, having lost two of their three games on that occasion, will hope for better fortune this time round. Zoran Zlatkovski scored three times in the qualifying round while a recovery from 2-0 down to snatch a draw in their final fixture against Turkey, which ultimately secured their progress, showed the fighting spirit in the team.

Thanks Tony. I dont know what to say about the result. You ask me this morning if I would have been happy with 2-2 I would have said yes but now after reading the story I am  Only the first place team goes right?
PS: I would take this score when our A teams meet in Zagreb:howler:

Cale not performing well? Sure he may not be among dinamo's best, but he has done his job pretty well.

He should be one of the first on the team sheet. Especially if Bilic is going to play 4 at the back.

One player who has started to do really well is Dinjar from Osijek. I am suprised he is not there. Unless I am blind.

Shame, this generation most likely will not qualify but it was a difficult group, they lose today to Portugal, 2:1

Croatia - Portugal 1:2
Macedonia - Israel 0:0

1. Israel 4
2. Portugal 3
3. Macedonia 2
4. Croatia 1

If Croatia can beat Israel and the other game ends in a draw, there would be three teams with 4 points but probably Croatia wouldn't have any of the tiebreakers in their favor :o

The U21's lost 1:0 to France, Bartulovic was the best player. Croatia used a 4-4-2 :eek, very rare in Croatia soccer

Subasic
Mujdza - Corluka - Vucko - Cale
Jertec - Pokrivac - Brkljaca - Bartulovic
Rivic - Sharbini

SUBS - Vrucina for Brkljaca (46)
- Busic for Sharbini (46)

- Labudovic for Vucko (80)

The U19's were able to win their final game, 2:0 over Israel and salvage 2nd place, Portugal qualify

Croatia - Israel 2:0
Macedonia - Portugal 1:3

1. Portugal 3 2 0 1 5:3 6
2. Croatia 3 1 1 1 5:4 4
3. Israel 3 1 1 1 1:2 4
4. Macedonia 3 0 2 1 3:5 2

Pretty disappointing but Portugal always have a tough youth teams. The names on the Croatian team are pretty good, hopefully some can step up at the next level

Dinamo won't have any players for the U21's against BiH because the match against Ekranas is on the same day.

Bilic says he would like to manage this game against BiH but he hopes that a replacement in found soon.

Marijan Vlak is the favorite for the U21 job, Jarni is also another name that I've heard

Full list of candidates:
- Marijan Vlak (heavy favorite)
- Robert Jarni
- Martin Novoselac
- Krunoslav Jurcic
- Zlatko Dalic

Novoselac is the best option, under him our youth teams did the best and it's best he takes control of all the youth teams. Dalic also wouldn't be terrible, he is used to coaching young teams and was successful with Varteks (not in Europe)

Hrvatska Reprezentacija do 17. gonina (U-17) u Mađarskoj

Češka, Poljska, Irska i Srbija čine drugu skupinu.
Izbornik Ivan Gudelj pozvao je:

Damir Bošnjak (Dinamo)
Ivan Herceg (Dinamo)
Mario Jokić (Dinamo)
Mihael Pazman (Dinamo)
Davor Rogač (Dinamo)
Hrvoje Šikić (Dinamo)
Domagoj Francetić (Dinamo)
Duje Čop (Hajduk)
Goran Jozinović (Hajduk)
Saša Dreven (Varteks)

Franjo Tepurić (Slaven Belupo)
Aburahmin Besart (NK Zagreb)

some guy on sportnet went to the match, the second goal was from a header by Busic, assisted by Tadic. The next two goals were both good shots from 16-20 out.

Pokrivac, Tadic, Busic and Vucko were the most impressive according to this guy.

HRVATSKA: Subašić, Mujdža, Pokrivač, Bagarić, Ipša, Vučko, Tadić, Brkljača, Bušić, Jertec, Vručina (još su igrali: Šimić, Labudović, Lozo, Marčić, Dinjar, Sharbini i Mandžukić). Izbornik Slaven Bilić

Don't know what the formation was, Bilic usually uses a 4-2-3-1 one but it looks like they had three strikers with three midfielders (who knows :pp )

anyway, their qualifying group is one of the toughest but the squad should improve when the Dinamo players are allowed to play

Don't know if he wanted to job or not, but they should have rehired Novoselac. He did a good job with the U21's when he coached them before he made the jump to Cico's assistant coach.

Gudelj does a good job with the U17's....he does a good job at finding the talent. I believe he was the coach of that team when they were in the U17 World Cup in Trinidad back in 2001. I was actually going to go and watch but, 9-11 happened and the airports were all shut down.

Novoselac is a very good coach as well for that U21 level. I wonder if he was out of the loop or just didn't want to take the job?

A fair result 0:0

First Half it was basically all Croatia, 2nd half it was all Italy. I thought Rivic was very good. Had a few chances, should've done better though with them. Subasic the GK played a solid game. Vucko was OK (gets in trouble when he holds onto the ball though). And everyone is right aboput Bartulovic he just can't cross. He gets so much air under his crosses.:rollani:

For you US fans. Too bad we didn't get Rossi. He's a wonderful player. He came on in the 2nd half and was by far the best Italian player.

Subasic should sign for Hajduk, no reason why he should be in the 2.HNL. Who hit the post in the first half? I don't have RAI International, maybe they'll show the highlights on the Italian news

U-21: Casiraghi debut goalless Tuesday 15 August, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pierluigi Casiraghi’s debut on the Under-21 bench was a disappointing 0-0 draw against Croatia, but Giuseppe Rossi impressed.

The new Coach, replacing 1982 World Cup winner Claudio Gentile and with Gianfranco Zola as an assistant manager, caused controversy upon their appointment due to a lack of experience.

Croatia had the better of the first half and threatened with Rivic before creating the best scoring opportunity of the match in Grosseto.

Dinjar spotted goalkeeper Gianluca Curci off his line and aimed a lob from 30 metres, but the crossbar rescued the Romanista.

Little improved after the break, although Manchester United youngster Rossi impressed the few fans who attended the international friendly.

It was the talented 19-year-old’s debut at Under-21 level and the substitute almost snatched a winner on Padoin’s assist, but his header was off target.

Empoli forward Nicola Pozzi suffered an injury in the final stages, so Italy had to end the game in 10 men, as they had already completed their substitutions.

The European Under-21 Championship qualifiers begin in a fortnight and Italy open by taking on Austria on September 5 in Forli.

Italy U-21: Curci; Ferronetti, Potenza, Coda, Mantovani; Rosina, Aquilani, Nocerino, Defendi; Pazzini, Lodi

Naši mladi odigrali su vrlo dobru utakmicu i tehnički bili dominantni, a u prvom poluvremenu taktički nadigrali veoma jakog suparnika kojega također vodi novi izbornik, bivši reprezentativac Casiraghi.

A Ladić zna kako s vratarima...

Yeah but Bojinov is still what 20-21? It's amazing how young this guy started off in the Serie A.

His point is Blast, that Stimac was a big part of the 98 Vatreni(a stand up guy and great player) and yet look at him now, one of the most corrupt guys in Croatian soccer, the man that almost single handidly ruined Hajduk in the last 4 years. Just because they were part of the Vatreni doesn't mean they are gauranteed to be angels. Although I do feel that Stimac was the exception not the norm for those guys.

Stimac also owns his own sports betting agency...if that's not mafia underground run then I don't know what is.:rollani:

one has to be fair
stimac & grgic didn't ruin hajduk
they just finished the work
however hajduk was in deep shit even before stimac arrived.

so who started the process? who took loans with more than 60% interest rates? who started with the signing of contracts they knew they couldn't afford? isn't it funny how about at the same time those things started happening how the number of talented promising youngsters coming out from the youth ranks started decreasing? from the whole generation that came out(remember the one with pletikosa and deranja and miladin and vukovic and biliskov and sablic etc, remember also a year or two older players such as ivan leko and igor tudor) we came to the level where it takes us about 3 years till a youngster that can play in hajduk's first 11 comes out of youth ranks.

Kalinic scored all three goals for the U19's against Moldova. They used the same lineup as the previous game

Kalinic has scored 4 out of the 5 goals so far, don't know what Hajduk don't see in him, some guys on the Torcida forum say he is lazy but if he scores like this, its better than Jelavic

Moldavija – Litva 2:0

UEFA U17 2006/2007 Qualifiers
Just as soon as the U19 qualifiers end, the Croatian U17's begin their run to the EC 2007 in Belgium and hope to eventually qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup in South Korea. The Croatian U17's have been drawn in a tricky group, all the matches will be played in Estonia. Top two teams advance to the Elite Round which will take place early next year

I wish youth team formats were more expansive and creative with the youth format?

I wish they had the old system the U-21 used for all youth teams. I think it gives the kids more exposure and better value for all.

think it would be difficult. most of these U17 guys are still probably in school and are not professionals yet so it would be difficult for them to play 10 qualifiers perhaps in Kazakhstan to Norway

I agree, the U21 format was great but they changed it into something so stupid, Croatia lost their first match of qualifiers in Bulgaria, not an easy place to play and they were out before even playing at home

2006 Youth Review
Well no more official youth team games for 2006 and this is how the Croatian U21, U19 and U17 did.

Croatia U21
Bulgaria - Croatia 2:1 (Brkljaca)
Croatia - Ukraine 1:2 (Busic)

*The format for the U21 team was really stupid this season and hopefully they change it, I know they had to have a quick qualifying system because of the year change to odd years but now since they have more time they should come up with a real qualifying system. Its s shame that the U21's lose one match and then are automatically eliminated, they play 2 real matches in 1 1/2 years  This was also one of the toughest groups, Croatia was in pot 1 but then get a finalist and a decent youth team

Croatia U19
Croatia - Lithuania 2:0 (Kalinic, Savickas og)
Croatia - Moldova 3:0 (Kalinic x3)
Serbia - Croatia 2:2 (Rasic, Turkalj)

*They advance to the Elite Round and this is the same generation the finished 4th in Europe at the U17 level. Kalinic is the all-star of this team but there are other talentes like Lovren, Sorsa, Ljubicic and Badelj. It will be interesting to see who they get next round and see where they play it. Remember at the U17 level these guys were able to beat Portugal in the Elite Level but the matches were played in Croatia

Croatia U17
Norway - Croatia 5:0
Croatia - Estonia 7:1 (Scrbec x2, Besic x2, Sacer x3)
Holland - Croatia 5:1 (Scrbec)

*This team stinks, ok they beat Estonia 7:1 but seriously these guys are the future of the HNL. No surprise actually, I wasn't expecting them to beat Norway and Holland but wasn't expecting results like that. Hopefully they didn't half-ass these games

At the club level, Hajduk Split juniors were successful in three international tournaments

I'd have the U-17 coach's head in a noose and hanging from the nearest tree. No Croatian team should have that many goals scored on them. I don't care if they suck but a coach should be able to organize them defensively.

Ivan Gudelj: Nastupili smo bez osam igraca

Vijesti s kvalifikacijskog turnira reprezentacije "do 17" u Tallinnu doista nisu bile ugodne.

Kad su Nizozemci susret s nama poceli bez trojice vaznih igraca, bez problema smo pola sata odrzavali rezultata 0:0 - kaze Gudelj.

Ohrabruje sto narastaj nije los, rezultat ce doci drugom prigodom...

I dont know about the other guys, but I hear Cop is a talent like his old man was.

Vrijeme radi za njega i uz pravilan razvoj može postati veliki as.

Početkom prošle godine o malom Prši pisala je i Slobodna Dalmacija. Milan je tada kazao kako mu Dado (očevi su im braća) stalno šalje poklone “kopačke, dresove, majice, hlače, kaput...” te dodao:

- Bit ću ja odličan igrač, možda i bolji od Dade. Volio bih igrati u velikim klubovima.

Osim njegove izjave kako bi "on volio"...

Ladic is a bum, what has he done to deserve managing the U21's? And now he is causing trouble with Hajduk and he didn't call up either Ilicevic or Rakitic. Was it really that hard to hire Novoselac?

Spain spared Scotland showdown

Last season's UEFA European Under-19 Championship finalists Spain and Scotland will be kept apart in the 2006/07 Elite round after the seedings were announced for the 16.00CET draw on 5 December in Nyon.

Trio join qualifiers
Spain, who lifted the trophy for the third time in five years in Poland this July, were one of three teams given a bye to this stage along with fellow top seeds England and Italy. They join 25 successful teams from the qualifying round in the draw for seven groups of four nations. Only the winners of each mini-tournament, to be played at one venue next spring, will progress to the finals from 16-27 July along with hosts Austria.

Scotland seeded
Scotland, like Hungary, Israel and Romania, will be seeded along with Spain, England and Italy in Pot A due to their qualifying round results. The second group contains 2005 winners France, while a team to watch in Pot C will be Turkey, who contain much of the squad that took the 2005 UEFA European U17 Championship title. The team they beat on that day, the Netherlands, are in Pot D. One team from every seeding pot will be placed in each group, with sides that played each other in the qualifying round being kept apart as far as possible.

Seeding groups

Pot A: England, Spain (holders), Italy, Scotland, Hungary, Israel, Romania.

Pot B: Republic of Ireland, France, Serbia, Czech Republic, Norway, Portugal, Croatia.

Pot C: Germany, Turkey, Sweden, Slovakia, Switzerland, Russia, Iceland.

Pot D: Greece, Poland, Netherlands, Georgia, Bulgaria, Denmark, Azerbaijan.

Naći ćemo dostojne nasljednike sadašnjih A reprezentativaca.

U rujnu novi ciklus
Ladićeva selekcija (do 21 godinu) najesen kreće u novi ciklus kvalifikacija za EP 2009. Igrat će mladići rođeni 1986. i mlađi, a suparnike saznat će u ožujku.

Koliko ste blizu Dinama?

izvukao pobjedu 2:1

I do feel bad for Slavonci, they seem to get a raw deal by the HNS at every level.

Plus another example of how bad Ladic is....

Darko Bodul: Zbog Hrvatske sam odbio Austriju i BiH

Uz Danijela Pranjica, u Heerenveenu igra jos jedan Hrvat.

Jednom prilikom pitao me trener u klubu za koga cu igrati. I njemu sam odgovorio sto sam odlucio. Rekao mi je da sam dobro odabrao. Otkrit cu vam da su me i ljudi iz Nogometnog saveza Bosne i Hercegovine kontaktirali, zeleci me privoliti da igram za njihovu reprezentaciju posto su mi roditelji iz Kiseljaka. No, moja odluka je cvrsta - samo Hrvatska.

Koja je vasa pozicija u momcadi?
- Igramo sustav 4-3-3, a ja sam najcesce sredisnji napadac, no, mogu igrati i druge napadacke pozicije.Igrao sam nekoliko puta i sredisnjeg veznog.

Imate li nogometni uzor?

I think that article is a bit harsh but I agree about Ladic, the man has no business managing the U21's, I would prefer a guy like Dalic, Jurcevic or even bring back Novoselac.

Though I find that NK Osijek article a bit harsh: first of all the guys they mentioned all play for some youth categories and are too young for the U21's and Ladic will have many chances to watch them in a real match, not some friendly (yeah I know it is against a good opponent but still friendly) Second, Dinjar was used by Ladic, and Primorac is too old

Also with the qualifying system, the U21 only got to play 2 matches in a year, not times to experiment, luckily UEFA changed their format

but overall, Ladic shouldn't be the manager, but that article is making a big deal over nothing really, they will get their chances, so what if Ladic didn't watch them?

Some key players missing: Mandzukic, Kalinic (injured) Glavina and Bartulovic (club won't allow them to go) Ilicevic, Rakitic (unknown whether they will play for Croatia)

Cheers for the info.

I thought Kalinic wouldn't be there because he has been injured for a few weeks. As for Tadic, I am sure Ladic got a phone call from Maminjo about that :smileani:

Who is this Begovic chappy ?

Anyone know much about Duspara & Bosnjak ?

I think Rukavina & Tadic would make a good duo up front.

I assume the match won't be televised anywhere ?

Ivan Begovic, regular at Varteks, though don't know much about him

Domagoj Duspara is a former Dinamo Zagreb youth player (played in the same generation as Corluka and Loncaric) he currently plays in Poland though :googly:

I had to look up Miljenko Bosnjak and his story is pretty strange in terms of a career. He played in the 3.HNL for a club from Zagreb before signing in the Slovenian first division. He has 3 goals in the Slovenian league

About this generation in general, the forwards look really good and Gabric could be a good player but outside of that most of these guys are average HNL players

edit: also Ladic is not calling up Busic at all, no matter what form he is in, Ladic and Hajduk had problems when they had the winter camp

Yeah I read an article yesterday about Busic. I think that strikers like Rukavina, Tadic, Mandzukic & Kalinic are better than Busic (or have the potential to go further than him), but Busic has been scoring regularly recently and deserves to be in the squad.

One guy that interests me is Dejan Lovren. He's a Dinamo Zagreb player currently loaned out to Inter in the 2nd division and is playing regularly. I remember a couple years back he played in the U17 Euro Championships and by all reports was very impressive. I think he's also the youngest player ever to play for the Croatian U17's (he was 15). He could be one to watch in the next 2 or 3 years.

Italy won 2:1, Ladic was very unhappy after the match. Italy were the much better team in the first half, Begovic scored for Croatia at the hour mark and Italy got the winner in the 85th minute, similar to the Dinamo goal in the derby, a Croatian defender tried to dribble out of the box and lost the ball and they scored

In 15 days Ladic says Rakitic, Spiranovic and Ilicevic will get the callup, but its up to them if they want to play for Croatia. (are they playing in the 24th or that week?)

Loncaric
Bozic - Ipsa - Misic - Pamic
Duspara - Gabric - Dinjar
Bosnjak
Rukavina - Tadic

Lovren, Begovic, Prahic, Bacak and Vuk also played

edit: so has Ladic won a game at all with the U21's? :lala: this generation I fear won't do any better

why does everyone wants Ilicevic in our national team? i mean he's 20 already and still isn't a regular player in Bochum besides if a Cro player wants to play in our NT than he should play in a sub-club but not clubs like Nurnberg or Bochum:S

And i can't judge Spiranovic because i didn't have seen nothing from him but the kid already said that he wants to play for Australia so why should he change his mind when Ladic is giving him a offer?

Rakitic-He must and he will play! i doubt that he will play for our youth team but he sure will play for the seniors!!

and last thing: Ladic should retire!

I think people want Ilicevic for the U-21s, not the senior team because he is not good enough to get a spot in the senior NT yet.

why not? Croatia is not a country which can just dispose players away, we need every player possible, we aren't Brazil where we don't mind missing out 10 (or whatever number) players because they have hundreds to take up those missing numbers

Ilicevic is playing in the Bundesliga, something many of the current U21's aren't doing, it can only help

I agree. But I don't think we should be begging or chasing players endlessly either (think Bilos & Rakitic).

Ilicevic is 20 and has had quite a few appearances in the Bundesliga this season, he has been playing far more regularly than say Drago Gabric has for Hajduk (they are the same age) and I think he would be a welcome addition to our U-21 NT.

also, you cannot just dismiss a guy, who knew in 2004 Petric was going to be our starting striker along with Eduardo in 2007?

that generation was probably our most talented in recent years and Petric I believe struggled to get into the team because of guys like Eduardo, Ljbojevic, Zahora but now he is better than Ljubo and Zahora combined

just shows you, you never know with these guys, some are late bloomers and some don't get proper chances at the youth levels

another good example is Budan

and Prof, I am not saying we should chase players, but if the player is interested, we shouldn't avoid them and ignore them

I pretty much agree with you, especially the highlighted part.

As for young players, you never know how they will end up once they hit 22-24 and even later for defenders & goalkeepers. Plenty of teen stars disappear into obscurity later on.

If out of every U-21 cycle we can get 2 or 3 good players who are future NT material we have plenty of fresh blood to fill out the senior team ranks.

If we can get one high quality NT player from the youth sides every few years we are doing OK.

Drazen Ladic and his U21 team will play two matches next week. On Friday the 23rd they will play Slovakia and on Tuesday the 27th against Slovenia.

Ante Rukavina will not be availible for either match as he is with the "A" team.

Ladic says he will mainly keep the squad against Italy intact, though he will callup the youngster from Osijek Domagoj Vida

About Ilicevic and Rakitic...Rakitic is closer to Switzerland than Croatia, and Ladic is still unsure about him

Ivo Ilicevic the situation is much better. Ladic will call him up, if he is interested and it seems that he is

yes, but they don't play official matches, usually the team that plays in the Alpe-Adria Cup is a U20 team except Ladic last time used a real U21 squad

Now Mandzukic also won't be available for the U-21s, I guess Ladic will rely primarily on Tadic & Kalinic (who are both very capable youngsters IMO).

Kalinic won't play today, he is slightly injured and they won't risk him, he could play in the midweek game against Slovenia

Today they play Slovakia, the game for some reason is being played in Lucko :googly:

Here is the squad Ladic chose (funny how he or whoever is making him pick these players say he won't pick players from abroad but there are 3 here)

Goalkeepers: Filip Loncaric (Dinamo) Ivan Vargic (Vukovar '91)
Defender: Manuel Pamic (Rijeka) Josip Misic (Kamen Ingrad) Tomislav Bozic (Kamen Ingrad) Kristijan Ipsa (Varteks) Dejan Lovren (Inter Zapresic)
Midfielders: Mario Jurin (Hrvatski Dragovoljac) Igor Prahic (Varteks) Ivan Begovic (Varteks) Marko Dinjar (Osijek) Domagoj Vida (Osijek) Miljenko Bosnjak (Drava, SLO) Domagoj Duspara (Leoben, POL) Drago Gabric (Hajduk) Denis Glavina (Dnipro, UKR)
Forwards: Ante Rukavina (Hajduk) Mario Mandzukic (NK Zagreb) Josip Tadic (Dinamo) Ivan Bacak (Kamen Ingrad)

the squad doesn't look all the bad really, only the manager is clueless, oh btw, Ruki and Mandzukic will play but as soon as the match is over they will return to the A team
