About the most disrespectful thing one can do, and it seems it's quite widespread. :( This is the occasions I have noticed so far:

English fans booed the French national anthem.
Spanish fans booed the Greek national anthem.
English fans booed the Swiss national anthem.
Croatian fans booed the French national anthem.

Did I miss anything? :irritate:

I have only noticed the English fans doing it. It doesn't surprise me as they are ALWAYS at it in international competitions. They're a disgrace to their country.

I don't know about the Spanish and the Croats though. I hope it doesn't happen again because it's cowardy and childish.

The Spanish people in Porto did it too, shameful but true.

England is not the only country that boo's national anthems  We booed the French but that's perfectly understandable...i'd encourage it ;) The Swiss national Anthem was respected and not booed.

That's just not true. You could hear the boos clearly from the TV.

English fans are obviously not the only ones doing it.

thsi self-evident, hence, not in anyone's list. Too obvious! :dielaugh:

I see no particluar problem in boowing national anthemns. Teh prob is that it re-instates stupid nationalistic feelings in those whose anthem got booed.

It might be a problem when you play qualifications, cause its a metter of being good HOST and respect your guest and stuff. That might agree with it. But on a Euro/WC etc competition when everyone is a guest ... dont think its fine, but dont think its worst than any other form of supporting that takes negative implications.

I also think it's very disrespectful and shows a distinct lack of class to boo the players when they announce the lineup :rollani: You don't have to cheer for them but to boo them is just not right.

I'm not a big fan of national anthems, and it doesn't wake up in me any kind of feelings... except in sporting events. This is why I prefer my anthem unbooed, because it's the occasion that players, fans, coaches etc etc are all in for a final "get together" before the game starts. This is also why I want the players to sing it (though it's their choice obviously).

Booing it is just stupid and serves no purpose. It is a problem and I find tottaly disgusting, but well... I doubt anything can be done about it.

It was nice to see the English players singing our Anthem for once, usually they stand there looking blank.

It is not that we expected any manners from the Dutch anyway ;)

Disrespect for the opponet is pretty frequent in sports event, I am not too suprised that it is not different in Portugal at the EURO.

Though it is still despiseful IMO

the football supporters should look at how the the rugby ones behave IMO
they always respect the players from the other teams, especially when they attemp a penalty kick (hum except the french :( who sometimes boo at these times which make me feel bad :( )
all in all booing the national anthems is disgusting . period

It's something you just don't do. You can boo a player who made a bad foul no problem (or Simeone or Miha as a general principle ;)), but disrespecting an entire country is just not on.

annax
June 18th, 2004, 15:05
It might be counterproductive because it gets the booed feeling like they want to get one back on the pitch for the disrespect :D

Well that's a silly comment Jamal.

Don't worry English fans, we're worse when it comes to this, we boo not only the opponnents anthem but also our own :rollani: and sometimes, just our own. Hopefully that'll change soon.

Yes Luigi, just a matter of lack of respect these days.

I got sickened as so often by my countrymen, booing (how the hell do you write that :D ) the German anthem en masse. First they boo the anthem, and then they are quiet for 80 minutes until RVN scores. Some fans eh

But we are not the only ones, it is a widespread trend. :yuck:

Booing anthems is almost as disrespectful as Miss Totti spitting in someones face.

Sometimes I wonder what the point is in doing this is, Scottish fans did it to GSTQ in 1999 and it only made the english players more determined. The same thing happened at Wembley when the english fans done it to FOS, ended up firing up our players for the game.

Seriously Martin? Honestly?

I can't agree with that. I won't boo a national anthem (I'll boo GSTQ in my own home but not at a game) but I'll boo players. Every week I go to a Ross County game, I boo the opposition players as they get their names read out before hand. It's what home fans do.

It shouldn't be encouraged but it's not that big a deal. I wouldn't be personally offended in the slightest if the English/British national anthem was booed. That's not to say I would go out and boo or whistle during another country's anthem but if booing national anthems is all we have to worry about we should count ourselves lucky.

Not really since we're still left with the old Yugoslavia hymne, from the days the country was still one big meltingpot. We need to have the Serbian one now. Makes sense :)

Do you know what's funny though? Our fans stand up for the national anthem, they then boo it and when it finishes they clap!! Are they applauding the anthem, applauding themselves for booing the anthem or are they applauding the fact that it's over?

It's like burning another country's national flag.. sports should never overlap with politics that way. The countries are not at war, for Christ' sake.. it's only a football game.

You should have. It was embarrasing enough to trade in your passport.

Anyway, it was occasional, because the Czech anthem did not get booed thank god.

and at the end of the day, whichever way you want to look at it, a National Anthem is nothing more than a piece of music.

Luigi Vampa
June 20th, 2004, 20:15
sure its a piece of music but its what it represents. its not like people are booing the musical piece, theyre booing it because of who it belongs to.

Luigi Vampa
June 20th, 2004, 20:16
but it must be said that booing the anthem doesnt necessarily mean they dislike the country, its just that football can bring out such an ugly nationalism in people.

A National flag usually has an emblem printed on it ;)

It would be nice if fans from all countries respected each others national anthems but as we all know there is always going to be fans trying to drown out there rivals anthem, it never winds me up, you just need to remember there only booing a piece of music written to represent your country, there are far worse things in life than booing music :)

I thought it was quite funny though when we played England and for weeks leading up to the game they were asking England fans not to boo our national anthem. They must have been completely confused when they heard booing and it coming from the serbia end.
