Nesta VS Bergomi : Who Is The Fifth Greatest Italian Defender Of All-Time

Baresi, Maldini, Scirea and Facchetti are the top four greatest Italian defender of all-time undoubtedly. How about the fifth ? Nesta and Bergomi is an equal couple. They played in different style but the same position. Bergomi is known as the greatest marker in football history but he was very rough style of player. Nesta is by far more elegant in sweeper role but his injury is a main obstacle in his career not to reach the highest potential.

Bergomi IMO because he was more consistent historically. Nesta is elegant but as you said injuries have hindered his acheivement progression.

Bergomi was better in the air. Nesta's positioning and distribution is better. Nesta has had a more successful club career while Bergomi's NT career was better. I pick Nesta overall as he is one of my all time favorite players.

For me, I admit Nesta is slightly better in overall ability. The reason I rank Bergomi ahead of Nesta in DF list is due to performance in overall career. Bergomi is better than Nesta as a young star before 22 years old. After 30 years old, Bergomi is still stand for a distance to be an important player of the 1998 FIFA World Cup Italy squad while injury effect Nesta to tend down of his career.

Easily Nesta. Bergomi at 35 couldn't dispossess Messi the way Nesta did at Camp Nou Even when Bergomi was at his peak playing at right back, Tassotti was the better player than him.

I'm pretty sure he'd do better since Messi was only 11 at the time.

Raul has had a longer and injury-free career in comparison with Ronaldo. Does not make Raul the better player though, simply because Ronaldo, well, was the better player overall. The only thing Canna had over Nesta is aerial prowess. Everything else, Nesta is better. And, Nesta is yet to hang up his boots. Canna already has.

Ergo Fabio > Sandro.
oh come on Canna will never get in the talk of best ever CB while Nesta can. Xavi has been substance all his career is he better than Zidane? Ofcourse not. Canna is hugely overrated due to his Ballon Dor win.

Yeah, he's always been world class but I don't think he deserved the Ballon d'Or win. Although France lost, Zidane probably deserved it more for lighting up the tournament from the Spain match onwards. If not for the red card, who knows?

Out of the Italian team, I think Pirlo and especially Buffon deserved it more than Cannavaro.

Yeah, like Georgatos was better than Maldini.

Bergomi would just give Messi his patented stare of death and the little roid-raging muppet would wet his shorts and gladly hand over the ball voluntarily.

Definitely Nesta, in fact Nesta vs. Scirea is the close one here and Bergomi should be compared to Cannavaro. But Bergomi did sport the greatest combination of unibrow and moustache ever...

Irriducibili? No thanks, I'm a fan of Lazio.

No brainer. Nesta. IMO Nesta is the best Italian defender of all time indeed, but I know it's difficult against the sacred monsters tradition considers better than him.
