To be honest, I don't know.
When you try to do the good thing and let people down easy, you still come across as a villain. For some reason, a tough break-up makes you seem less obnoxious. Even, then, it doesn't seem to go so well. Because you clearly should have chosen the nice approach. and let her down easy
In most instances, the very fact you even want to break up makes you automatically obnoxious. And it also knocks her self-confidence. You never really win with those folks. I'd say it's all about damage limitation. Showing that you're unaffected by the break-up also seems to aggravate things. On the other hand, pretending you care will land you in trouble - why were you breaking up in the first place?
So imo the best approach seems to be to get too busy for a relationship. That way, it's not so much your fault but your job's fault. But even that doesn't guarantee there won't be "blow back".
If there's a better way, I'd like to know as well.
@ Marie, I'm assuming the girl thinks that LL isn't married. If he does tell her he's married, he becomes a total dick. Which he obviously isn't.
