How about merging them for a 32 team WC? That would have made more sense.

Yeah, Mexicans clubs left Libertadores because they couldn't cope with a 1 calendar mixed with South America, Infantile thinks it make sense to have a 2 years calendar between the clubs with impossible long distance travels.

FIFA expected to approve expanded, more lucrative World Cup on Tuesday

FIFA expected to approve expanded and more lucrative World Cup on Tuesday - ESPN FC

FIFA is set to make the World Cup bigger and richer, even if the price to pay is lower-quality football.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino hopes his ruling council will agree on Tuesday to expand the 2026 World Cup to 48 nations, playing in 16 groups of three teams.

A decision could be delayed if some council members demand to know exactly how many qualifying places each continent will get before agreeing to scrap the 32-team format. The current format has been successful, popular and profitable since 1998 and is locked in for the next two World Cups in Russia and Qatar.

I actually dont mind this

32 teams already 16 too many.
For most countries, organizing a World Cup tournament with 32 teams, 10-12 venues and 3 days break between matches already a logistical nightmare.

I feel Sehnsucht* for the 16 teams World Cup, where a country like Switzerland, Sweden, Chile, Mexico or Uruguay could host it, without doing a disastrous campaign of Holland-Belgium, Spain-Portugal or Japan-Korea join bids.
PS: premonition, Qatar 2022 will be a disaster, the country too small for hosting 32 teams.

* google this word, I dare you.

Nice to hear that nothing has changed and that the "new" leadership is just as corrupt as the old one.

This has been discussed for a while, mostly CONMEBOL pushing for it for the Mexican/USA market and Mexico have added fuel to the fire. USA hasn't really been pushing for it probably because they are nervous to lose their 99% certain World Cup spot in CONCACAF but they don't mind hosting fake Copa Americas

Also, the Caribbean nations would never go for this, with the new 48-team World Cup arriving why would they join with CONMEBOL and face tougher competition? I read in this new format, CONCACAF will get 6-7 spots, meaning teams like Jamaica, Trinidad and possibly Haiti can make it, won't happen in a combined region even if there were 12 spots as realistically every CONMEBOL team minus Bolivia is better than these Caribbean nations

The end of International football as we know it

Looks like the last bastion of our sport has succumbed to money from so-called emerging markets like China, Mid-East, South-East Asia and what not.

Total disgrace. Looks like lower league football is the only place where core values of the game will be respected.

I honestly hope WW3 happens in the next 5 years so that I can avoid seeing these bastards at FIFA making a mess of the game.

Last bastion? This is just a formal marriage between two bed buddies. May the lovely couple produce many wonderful kickbacks together.

In some ways it's good because I already watch many of the qualifying games for world cups and euro cups and what not but in a way it's bad because of so many boring games that will water down the tournament. It'll just take longer to get to the good stages...maybe potential for more upsets this way? Who knows. Whatever, I'm ok with shaking up the status quo every once in a while. Sometimes the only way to know if something works is to try it.

I am not against change per se of course, but 16 groups of 3 teams each with two teams per group getting through to the next stage? That is pure boredom.

Then again having the 32 teams in the knock-outs could make it more likely to have surprises.

Paraphrasing a fb friend (but using my team):

"Am I religious? No, but I'm a supporter of [the Romanian NT], so I'm delusional enough already"

Venezuela v Benin is surely more interesting than a Real v Bayern or Barca v Chelsea for the 1000000th time over and over again

it would be okay if only the group winner qualifies (I think it would actually leave the total amount of matches and the length of the tournament exactly the same as it is now and arguably would make the group stage matches more tense and meaningful).

but having a knockout round of 32 would be an absolute mess and effectively render the whole group stage irrelevant too

Does FIFA really see a group like this attractive in a business sense, not even talking about entertainment or football quality just business

Spain
Iran
Costa Rica

3 team groups is worse than expansion in itself.

8 groups with 6 teams each and 2 teams advancing would be better but then the clubs would go full butthurt because of too many games and length of tournament
