Under the 48-team format, the top two sides seem likely to qualify for a last-32 knockout stage, with 80 games in total, up from the current 64. But crucially the duration of the tournament is likely to remain at 32 days, a key counter-argument to the complaint by European clubs – who provide the bulk of the players – that too much additional pressure will be placed on their highly-paid stars.

One potential flaw, however, is that penalty shootouts may have to be introduced to settle drawn group matches in the event of countries deliberately manipulating results in the last series of first-round games to ensure both progress.

While Infantino would doubtless argue that he has delivered on his election manifesto promise to benefit smaller nations across the globe, critics will argue that expanding FIFA’s flagship tournament is purely a money-making exercise to provide badly needed additional revenue. A leaked FIFA-commissioned report examining the various options suggested a 48-team finals would generate an extra $1 billion in broadcasting and sponsorship, plus ticket sales.

Exactly where the 16 extra places will go now becomes the centre of debate, with a decision likely to be taken in principle before the FIFA Congress in May where the whole package will be approved. It is understood UEFA have been offered three more slots (up from 13) with the bulk of the rest expected to go to Africa and Asia.

horrible, just horrible

Infantino is an absolute scum, looks like a proper fascist dictator in how he' has already dealt with the inner opposition at FIFA (and with those who dared to expose his lavish personal expenses): FIFA drafts in specialist labour lawyers to deal with staff discontent - Inside World Football

I wish we could have Blatter back

From what I read the proposal for the 16 is:
4 Africa
4 Asia
3 SA
3 Europe
2 NA/MA

Wouldn't it be 8/10?

Let's hope the half spots are gone, might as well give one automatic spot to Oceania too.

FIFA set to make something like £500 million from the expansion.

Does this mean that in UEFA the 4 best 2nd-place teams will qualify automatically and the other 4 go to playoffs?

There will be more opportunity for upsets, which could be good for nwo teams, I guess...but clearly the overall effect is going to be a watered down level of play. (last summer's Euros.) Da 2016 Copa america was the shit tho

Who knows what will happen 7-8 years from now when these qualifiers start, let's see how this UEFA Nations League goes first

how could these people get so retarded?

I think European countries should try to break away from FIFA because this is just getting ridiculous now..

LOL, I didn't even realize that they're proposing 16 groups of three teams each and the top two advancing to the next round. This shit is even worse than I thought.

Europe and South America should break out of FIFA and create their own tournament. A 16 team format with 12 teams from Europe and 4 from SA.

No need to thank me.

Also, the Caribbean nations would never go for this, with the new 48-team World Cup arriving why would they join with CONMEBOL and face tougher competition? I read in this new format, CONCACAF will get 6-7 spots, meaning teams like Jamaica, Trinidad and possibly Haiti can make it, won't happen in a combined region even if there were 12 spots as realistically every CONMEBOL team minus Bolivia is better than these Caribbean nations
If I was FIFA president or whoever in charge,
16 team Copa America combining North, Central and South America --> Yay
Combined North, Central and South America for WC Qualification --> Nay

I think Infantino means 48 is like 16 teams qualified for the "final" round (i.e. 3 matches minimum guaranteed) while the 32 facing each other in 2 legged play-off match to get another 16.
Yes, we have potential Angola vs Iran, Thailand vs Iceland or Venezuela vs New Zealand matches.

I am an Asian and I vouch for this.
Maybe 10 European teams, 4 South Americans, 1 Asian/African/Oceanian, 1 North/Central America.
We have a Dream World Cup with 2018 likely consist of:
England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, Denmark/Sweden/Turkey and Russia
Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay
Japan/South Korea/Ghana/Nigeria/Cameroon//Algeria/Ivory Coast/Australia and Mexico
Imagine THAT!!!!

Simple to say, that since the "league" format started to be used in South America, the 7th placed team (of course, in a few of those years, there were only 9 teams, since Brazil didn't play every time) made only 22 points and always lost more games than won (in some sittuations, lost the double number of games). It does not matter, we are already with too much games and the EURO was awful already with too many teams.

If the 7th best of 9 teams (=third worst) would have more wins than losses that would be something.

So not sure what exactly you want to say here.

Still the 7th/8th best team in SA would go through in playoffs against any African or Asian side most of the times, not to mention Oceania of course.

I am not so sure, we can be talking about Peru, Bolivia and Venezuela here. There is some level of experience and quality, but, African teams are very even, they may not have a big caliber team, but the difference between the teams is not so big and their qualification is complicated. For example, I can see Egypt giving a hard time to any of those teams.

It is absolute ridiculous, with 7 spots they should just give a permanent spot to Brazil and Argentina.

Highly improbable but technically it's possible for 7th of 9 to have more wins than losses:

Rank Team W D L Pts
1 Croatia 14 2 0 44
2 B 12 2 2 38
3 C 10 2 4 32
4 D 8 2 6 26
5 E 6 4 6 22
6 F 5 4 7 19
7 3rd Worst 1 15 0 18
8 H 0 2 14 2
9 Serbia 0 2 14 2

And as expected, the Caribbean Football Union (CBU) rich represents roughly 3/4ths of CONCACAF members are threatening to break away from CONCACAF to form their own confederation
