Canada names large squad for first camp under Floro
Men's National Team 27 August 2013

Incoming Canadian Head Coach Benito Floro has selected a vast 33-man squad for the first Men’s National Team camp of his tenure to take place in Valencia, Spain from 1-11 September.

The camp will feature two Men’s International Friendlies on 8 and 10 September against Mauritania (both kick-off times 17.30 local / 11.30 ET / 08.30 PT) at the Oliva Nova complex near Valencia.

For Floro, who will be taking charge of his first matches with the team, the camp will be an important first step in establishing a new tactical plan and relationship with the players.

"This first camp is important for us as we want to achieve our tactical structure as soon as possible," said Floro.

"It will also be important to establish the relationship between the coaches and players."

Floro has opted to call-in a blend of youth and experience for the camp with many regulars from Canada’s FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers and CONCACAF Gold Cup campaigns returning to the fold; but also with three players earning their first call-ups to the Men’s National Team.

"For me, the age of the player is not necesarrily important," said Floro.

"What is important is the tactical behaviour of the player on the pitch and the level of the player's ability. I have brought in a number of young players because I like the level they are playing at - and if things progress well - we will be able to bring in more youth players in the coming years."

Domestic players Samuel Adekugbe (D / Vancouver Whitecaps FC), Jackson Farmer (D / Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency) and Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé (M / Académie Impact Montréal) will all be taking part in their first camps with the senior Canadian team after featuring at various levels of the youth national team setup.

Dwayne De Rosario is the most experienced player in the squad with 73 caps under his belt.

With the 0-0 draw against Mauritania on September 8, the Canadian Men's Team is now on a 6-match scoreless streak.

Mauritania is ranked #151 by FIFA, just behind Palestine and just ahead of the Solomon Islands.

Update: Make that 7 games without a goal. Sept. 10: Mauritania 1-0 Canada

Canada's Benito Floro:
If Camilo, Gershon Koffie, Felipe, Hassoun Camara are serious, I'm listening

OLIVA, Spain – With an ever-growing list of foreign-born MLS talent saying they may be interested in suiting up for the Canadian national team, new head coach Benito Floro says anyone showing a desire to wear the red and white would be more than welcome.

Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Gershon Koffie already has permanent residency status in Canada, while his club teammate Camilo has already applied. Montreal Impact defender Hassoun Camara also submitted an application for residency, and his club teammate Felipe Martins says he intends to do so next year as soon as he is eligible.

All four players have expressed interest in playing for their adopted country. As Floro wrapped up his first training camp here as Canada's head coach, he said he’s in no way opposed if they wanted to join.

“For me, the person is from two places: Where you were born and grew up and then where he decides to live,” Floro told through a translator on Tuesday as Canada closed camp. “In my mind, [borders don't exist]. It is a delicate subject but for me – if they are very good players and they love Canada and they want to participate, for me, I’ll never have a problem.”

Hell, as long as they've got a pulse, they're welcome to play for Canada.

Floro has now left.

Thoughts on who could be next or what characteristics are needed in a coach for our NT?

from what I read the search for a new coach will take quite a while, with Canada not playing a competitive match until next summer they will simply hire and interim from within to close out 2016. My guess is they will hire a foreigner again but not sure how attractive the Canada job is. I'm sure there will be a campaign to hire somebody like Bob Bradley as well

A few weeks ago it was revealed that CSA turned down Jesse Marsch for the CNT job, while his stint at Montreal wasn't a success he is doing a good job at NY Red Bulls with integrating youth players and playing a high press system

What Canada really needs more than anything else is for their team to qualify for a World Cup n generate some legitimate excitement in the program. Now its gonna be 2022 at the earliest until that day comes.

they need to have their moment like the US 1990 cycle to jumpstart interest there.

Having the three Canadian MLS teams help too....I still think they can be a good NT.
